I don't even understand how the current system was implemented in the first place and even passed QA, honestly. Alliance gone - formerly allied troops are gone too, there can not be two ways about it.

Probably because that would result in too much uncertainty. Since your ruler or your allied ruler can die any time of the game, you would never be able to count on them while launching a war.
While marriages were important in creating alliances, some alliances also persisted well beyond : the Anglo-Portuguese alliance for example is one of the oldest alliances in history.
