Unitnames / Shipnames - prefixes

Hello all,

sth which annoys me always are the prefixes before the ships name (esp if these prefixes never existed, eg "KMS: Kriegsmarine Schiff" for germany and "IJN: Imperial Japanese Navy" for Japan.

could we get rid of this nonsense from start please?

I happen to like it. In real life, WW2 ships did have such references, didn't they? Seeing accurate unit names increases my immersion into the game.

I think prefixes, historically accurate or not, add to immersion. I decided to rename my ships once by taking out all the prefixes and it looked lame, something like Generic Ship #1 etc.

But I realise I may only be saying this because I'm not very interested in navies. The only thing I know about ships is that I love BBs, even though they were an obsolete concept by the time WWII came along.

LeeDub, i never said to take out ALL of them. Just the fake ones. feels a bit strange to have those which never existed, as if somebody started with the USA, then UK and CW minors and came to the conclusion that every navy had this :rofl: .

No Paradox did not invent it, IJN and KMS are widely used in history books and the like. I do not know when those prefixes were invented (I think they were invented by the Allies during the war).

why does the historical correct name looks odd? actually its the other way round as neither Kriegsmarine nor IJN used this stuff.

Having the USS Cole fighting the Prinz Eugen looks to me odder than the USS Cole fighting the KMS Prinz Eugen, it is purely an æsthetic issue though and tastes vary.

its a game forum after all, not a history board. so maybe keep the fake prefixes.

does france deserve a fantasy prefix as well?

Since the namescan be edited quite easily - what is the problem we are discussing here? It´s only a matter of who has to do the typing. After all it´s not that there are thousands of ships that have to be (re)named.

Actually, there are. The USA alone has 1130 naval units in all scenarios, though, admittedly, only 430-odd of them are individual ships. The UK has another 476 named ships and Germany, France, Italy and Japan also have considerable numbers. If I sound snippy about it it's just because I have gone through the lot of them sorting out reasonably representative attachment profiles and checking locations, dates, etc. for them all...

Oh - and you'll get the prefixes I have given them (apart from those I still have to finish off - for which you'll still get the prefixes I give 'em!). For the record, those don't include 'KMS' nor 'IJN'.

Well I was thinking of USS and similar when I posted. If the Germans never used them, then I don't want to see them for their ships! I like seeing the actual historically correct names. Aaah, Ariete division.... so brave in their metal coffins...

Sorry, but I decided to go with mostly "official designations" fairly early on.

Had I found the excellent wikipedia page linked above earlier, I would have used those - as it was I generally used what was in national naval history material. For Germany, France and Japan that would be nothing (although I may have got the odd 'HIJMS' somewhere that 'escaped'...).

I think it's just something to get used too, German ships without prefixes. Personally I think if it wasn't used at all in RL then don't call 'em that. Easy to fix too. Just a matter of Ctrl+H in Notepad and replace KMS and IJN with nothing.
