Let's use this thread to discuss, finess, and post for evaluation unitnames lists for the various nations in Vicky.

As a special favor, I'd like to request that folks remove previous drafts of various lists whenever possible... Just replace the text with "Removed draft of German list" or whatever... That way we won't have an unnavigable thread with 18 pages of German lists (not to pick on the Germanophiles, but... ) like the HoI thread.

Edit: Make sure you use division sized units for the ground units. I don't want regiments of 10,000 men.

Also remember that naval transports and subs are NOT individual ships, but flotillas of ships.

Excellent idea, GM! Time to put the masses to work!

I have one suggestion, though. When looking at naval unitnames in particular, people should check that if the given name is historical, it has the same classification in unitnames.csv as it does in relevant scenarios. For example, if someone wants to add an historical name to the monitor list of a country, they should check that the name is used for a monitor unit as opposed to an ironclad unit in the 1881 scenario. In other words, hopefully unitnames.csv works with the names already in the scenarios.

Latvian army

If Latvia somehow manages to revolt and build some divisions in Victoria's timeframe, they should named as following :

LIV;0;Kurzemes divizija
LIV;0;Vidzemes divizija
LIV;0;Latgales divizija
LIV;0;Zemgales divizija

Irregulars are much harder, because they were formed and named in smaller sizes (how would 1/3 of a divison be called in english ?)
Here would be some units for that :

LIV;3;Ziemeljlatvijas brigade
LIV;3;Landeswehr

Historically, there were some ships as well, though I have no idea what class they would be, if such ships would be even considered naval units in victoria

The ship names would be Virsaitis, Imanta and Viesturs.

Correct - submarines are in squadrons in Victoria, as opposed to individually (the same goes for transports as well).

The thing about Confederate and Union armies are, the Confederacy didn't name their divisions after numbers or anything.. they named them after the General. So, a division would be named "Lee's Division", for example. The Union divisions used Roman numerals. I Division, XI Division, XXXV Division.

I don't know if that's already in or no, but I thought I'd bring it up.

No the Corps were named via Roman Numerals. The Divisions would be named "3rd division of the III Corps" and such.

A note on the names: d'Anjou, Bartlett, and Bosc were the ringleaders of the group of Californian settlers that demanded the Mexican governor of California give up the area to them. Since they are the real leaders of California's first small baby steps to California's independence, it's only logical that they'd be the commanders of any army California would have raised, if it had remained independent.

Think of Bartlett as the Californian Sam Houston, actually.

Keep in mind that the ACW is but 1/20th of the time span of Victoria. The US used regiments as its basic structure up until about 1917. Labeling US divisions as '1st, 2nd 3rd...' is probably as accurate as anything.

While some find the feature of renaming divisions to be pointless, it is probably the most useful for achieving accuracy - listing a 'Crook's Division' for the Indian Wars or a 'Kent's Division' for the Spanish-American War would be just as out of place when they pop up in the ACW.

@Mios: while your lists are very pretty I really can't use them.

Units in Vicky are division sized, not regiments. It would just look wierd to see an army of regiments with 10,000 infantrymen in each... And we can't have French Divisions being defeated by German regiments, can we?


@Fireblade: "Mormon Infantry" just sounds wierd... Why not just "Infantry"? It's not like we call Hedjaz units "1st Muslim Infantry"....

Besides, just generic #st Infantry is so.. boring.

Priority should be ground and naval names for the great powers. IMHO Naval is even more important. 1st Infantry is lame, but 1st Battleship just looks stupid.
