Will you be able to edit a unit variant one you have made it so you don't have to keep making new variants when you get more experience?

Not 100% sure what the question is. I THINK that he is asking about unit (Division) templates. If this is true, then the answer is that to modify a template, it costs "experience points". You can modify a template multiple times during the game as new equipment comes on line. The more templates you have, the more templates you will have to modify. My understanding is that you can make a copy of a template for free, and then modifications (to that one template) would then cost you experience. So...it would make sense to upgrade existing templates first BEFORE copying them. My understanding also is that you can remove units (battalions) from a template at no cost (but I may be wrong on this).

If he is asking about variants of production models of equipment, I don't understand the question.

My interpretation of the OP:

So we know that you can make a variant of a model of equipment. So say you make a variant PanzerIV, the PanzerIV+, which has improved gun and engine. Later, you get more ground combat experience and you want to make a better variant. Can you (A) build upon the experience you sunk into the existing variant, to make a PanzerIV++, or do you need to (B) spend new experience to get up to PanzerIV+ level and then still more exp to get to PanzerIV++?

I think you must be able to 'upgrade' existing variants, otherwise it would be pretty unfair and nonsensical.

The alternative interpretation would be: Do I have to make the PanzerIV++, or can I just make the PanzerIV+ better, without changing the name or anything? My answer to that would be no, since there are already PanzerIV+'s out there, so you need some way to distinguish the new variant from the old.

Ah, I understand

The answer to the question is ....

You can't upgrade existing equipment in the game. You have to build new equipment. Once built, the Pzr4G will always be a Pzr4G.
There was a discussion about modding a number of event series' that would "upgrade" existing equipment basically by removing specific older equipment in the stockpile and replacing it with upgraded versions (at a cost both in time and resources).

I hope you can daisy chain your variants.... Panzer II -> Panzer II v2 -> Panzer II v3 etc. Using less exp overall as opposed to :

Panzer II -> Panzer II v2

then

Panzer II -> Panzer II v3

Is that what the OP is talking about? If I add 1 reliability to make the V2 then I want to build off that to the V3 to potentially increase reliability overall again using a little exp as opposed to starting over with 0 from the Original model and requiring more exp.

Yeah I don't think it would make sense if you had to start from the base model all the time. It would just encourage people to horde all of their XP to make the best variant possible in one shot, rather than a more natural evolution.

It should work that way. Interesting though if you want two variant lines. IE one tank with more armor for infantry and one with an improved gun for tank destroying. Once they show this in a WWW or DD we will know better. You hopefully just select a model and edit it as a variant from there so you could modify the base model or a variant of a variant, etc..

Well for the Pzr II model, it gets outdated pretty quickly. I plan to build a SPAAA variant of it (should work pretty well no big leap here), maybe the Marder II (historically a Pzr II variant) depending on what stats it would come up with, maybe an SP infantry gun/howitzer, I sure that there are possibilities I'm not thinking of right now. Existing models would be kept/used (even after production stopped) for things like a Lt Pzr Bn in an Anti-Partisan unit (probably brigade sized), and of course given (by Germany) to Rumania, Hungary Finland Bulgaria Slovakia etc so that they could field at least something resembling a Pzr unit.
Anybody who played War in Russia/Eastern Front, Western Front etc (by Gary Grisby) probably has a good idea of how to manage factories/production/allocation of models etc. Bottom line, use up the old models as quickly as possible, and get newer (as long as it will be long term) models coming out of factories as soon as possible. Take the efficiency hit, get those Pzr IV's out the door.
