I don't have the game yet, but I'm wondering if somebody can talk a bit about how unit upgrades work.

My understanding is that I have a slider, and I use that to devote a percentage of my production to upgrades. I don't get to choose which units get upgraded, but I do get to set units as priority upgrade. Is that esentually correct?

Here's what I want to know. Suppose I start a '36 game. Is it better to upgrade units all along, or is it better to wait. In other words, would it be cheaper to research several techs, and then upgrade, skipping an intermediate tech.

Is there anyway to guage how many units you have that nbeed upgrades?

What happens to the resources you devote to upgrades if you have no units to upgrade?

Hopefully I'll get my game tomorrow...I can shovel snow tonight to keep my mind off of world conquest. ;-)

Yes, thats it in a nutshell, what you devote are ICs

Heres the catch: no, no skipping intermediate upgrades. Say as France you have alot of 1918 infantry deployed, to get them to 1939 infantry, they will first upgrade to 1936, and then upgrade to 1939. (This I gathered from my readings)

If you go to the statistics tab and go to one of the sub-menus in the pull-down menu (I think its the land divisions one) there is a column on the far right that has upgrade status as a percent. To upgrade, I believe a unit cannot be in combat (not sure about movement though).

This I am not so sure about, I believe the IC's are just wasted, but I plan on checking the sliders at least once a game week or two (once war starts), unless something serious happens.

Yah, me too!
:p

Hope that helped some, (and hope I was mostly right, otherwise a lot more revising what I thought I figured out already)

I will try to answer one part of your question.

First off, there is a native prioritization.

Second, you can prioritise which units receive upgrades and replacements in the unit screeen. This supercedes everything, but when you have more priorities than resources assigned it will again use the 'native' rule applied to the prioritised units.

Third there is a fantastic tooltip on the replacement slider which tells you how many units need upgrading.

Fourth, the unit statistic screen allows you to examine each unit and sort by ugrade % so you can see exactly which units are upgrading NOW and how far along they are.

ENJOY!

I actually hope that's the case. It seems to make the most sense to me.

So then what's the strategy for upgrading? You withdraw a unit, and designate it as a priority upgrade. Then watch it's status and wait for it to complete?

I hope they're not wasted...that seems like just needless micro-management. At the very least I would hope that a warning would pop up that all upgrades are complete so that you can adjust the slider then.

Units are not withdrawn. They upgrade 'on the fly' if they are not in combat.

IC is wasted, but it is pretty easy to spot [IC indicators go from green to red on main screen]. Micro management will only come in if you are trying to upgrade all units simultaneously. And if you are trying to do that, then your strategy is micro-mangement. Try a different strategy. ;)

Does anyone know about tank (battleship, etc.) upgrades? For example can a Panzer 2 be upgraded to a Panzer 6 in one upgrade, or does it get to Panzer 6 status in stages (Panzer 3, then 4, then 5, then 6)? If this is possible, is it more costly to upgrade a Panzer 2 to a 6, than lets say a Panzer 2 to a 4.

As PaxMondo said earlier you cannot skip levels so a model 2 armor unit will have to go through all stages 2-6 to become model 6(there is more to unit composition then learning the new verhicle). However units that are several models behind will catch up(upgrade) faster the further away they are from the current "state of the art" model.

Upgrade costs are based on initial production costs. If a level II tank div costs 500 IC to build, it will cost a fraction of that to upgrade. Same for level III, and so on. There are multipliers that affect both upgrade time and upgrade cost. It is always more costly to upgrade from level 2 to level 6 than from 2 to 4. Simply because in order to go from 2 to 6, one must also first upgrade to 3, 4, and 5.

Must a unit be on the same land mass as the capital to upgrade, or can it upgrade anywhere it's in supply (as long as its not in combat)?

Anywhere. Although IIRC placing them in crappy infra provinces = lower ESE = slower upgrades.

When a unit has been given priority does this also go for reinforcements as well? Also when a unit has been given priority for upgrades will it always be classed as priority unit all will all the special priority end after the unit upgrade has been completed?

When a unit is prioritized, this means two things. First, the unit is a priority for reinforcements AND upgrades. There is no way to split this up. Second, the unit will remain on priority status until you remove said status.

When I saw this answer to the question, "Do units lose experience when upgrading?", I was was thrilled. It means that I will want to keep my British 7th Armoured Division intact as it goes from Vickers to Stuarts to Grants and Crusaders, because they will benefit from their previous experience. This is very nice.

It seems to me that I read that replacements DO cause a loss of experience. I hope this is true, as well. Very nice.

This is indeed true. The exp level of your replacements depends on your standing army/drafted army level, as standing army can give your replacements starting exp. By reinforcing you dilute the overall experience level in divisions, but gain firepower as the division nears full strength. Whether to reinforce or not is just one of the many HoI2 questions to ponder while driving to work :D .
