I almost always leave the land slider at 100%. There have just been too many times that I've forgotten that it's at 50% and have lost a long string of battles for "mysterious" reasons...:rolleyess:

Here's a shocker...

My current practice with Artillery is to build it about 5 months before going to war. I then DOW just as it's about ready, send masses of infantry (and possibly cavalry depending on where in the game I am) to defeat the defenders. I then leave minimal siege forces behind and keep on steamrolling through. Once those artillery are ready I move them to join the sieges since by the time they get there the morale may not be too bad and the only thing they're likely to face are recruits anyway.

After pummelling the enemy into the ground, capturing all their cities and cramming a nasty peace down their throats, I immediately disband all of that artillery unless I plan to use them sometime in the next 12-24 months. Hard to believe, but true since I'm always waaaaaaaaay over the support limit anyway. It ends up being sheaper to build/destroy/rebuild than to keep them hanging around. I just checked the end-of-game save file from my last game and during the course of it I built 22,000 artillery, of which I disbanded 19,328. I lost only 218 in combat and the balance to attrition.

Expensive, but it works.;)

Or you can go max defensive. You don't need a lot of artillery since you already have a siege bonus, and what little you need comes cheap.

During a recent noteworthy Trebizond/Byzantium game I lost 1132 pieces of artillery to combat, 21 to attrition, 53 to disbanding, and about 600 that went rebel in my late-game civil war. I never had more than 1200 artillery pieces at the same time, and due to max defensiveness they were fairly cheap. (1/3 of the cost of max offensiveness). In fact, for most of the game I stayed below 200 pieces, and nevertheless ended up conquering the world. Max defense is so nice!

Read my lips: use more cavalry :D
