I'm wondering what determines how much grain and naval supplies are produced and traded, as is mentioned when you move your mouse over the support limit. I can't seem to stay below my support limit so I'm really looking for ways to improve it. Is it how much of your non-colonial provinces have that resource? Or is a mere colony or trade post producing it enough? And do the resources produced in foreign provinces under your CoT control count as well? Thanks!

grain prodiced is based on how much your provinces produces, high production incomes = much suply

Grain traded is how much of what you trade that is grain example:

CoT worth 100gc
of that 30gc is form grain
you trade and gain 50gc from it
then you gain 15gc grain from it ((100/50)*30)

Just to make sure I understand: do ALL provinces count? Also simple Trade posts? Because I only have 8000 grain produced, while I have much more provinces producing that resource. I think I already know the answer from your "high production incomes = much suply" quote, but to be sure, it's the production income that counts, not the trade income, nor just a simple rule of +1000 support limit per grain resource?? Well, that would rend all my current grain trade posts completely useless.

And to take a concrete example from my current game: I now have +33000 support limit (which makes up for half of my current support limit) from grain traded. And I earn in about all CoTs 25% of the trade, and I have .70 trade level.
If I understand the formula right it's simplified to cover the entire world:

(my total CoT trade income * my trade level * the part of the world CoT trade income from grain) / total world CoT income = support limit / 1000

In other words:

0.25 * 0.70 * x = 33

X is the part of the world CoT trade income from grain. That would mean X is only around 188.5. Is this realistic?? Or do I simply have a problem with math?:)

Edited: I had a problem with my math...

Click on the helmet icon in the upper left area and it will show you your army stats, including support limit, how many troops you have of each type, and what you are spending for them. If you exceed your support limit your army maintenance costs start getting very expensive. Same with the navy, which you can access by clicking on the anchor icon in the same area.

You see your support limit if you click on the guy with the helmet (if I can imagine correctly) in the high left corner. If you hold your mouse over the number, you will see what determines the size of your support limit. And if you're above it, you'll pay yourself bankrupt (so to speak) in military maintenance costs. For example, my current support limit is 67000, while I have an army consisting out of 55000 infantry, the same amount cavalry, and 50 artillery. Especially those 50 artillery are killing me. IIRC I have to pay 5-10 ducats for them each month, at 50% maintenance cost!
PS: you can adapt your maintenance cost in the same window. It'll lower your morale though.

1. Conquer the world. You will gain a huge supply limit due to owning and trading grain, and having a stupendous manpower
2. Build plenty of Weapons Manufactories
3. Play a nation with plenty of core provinces, build conscription centres late in the game, and see your supply limit skyrocket

Or some combination of the three :D

Another question:
Do you use the army maintenance slider or do you just leave it at 100 % (as I do)? If yes, ever had any bad experience with sudden DoWs ?

I'll say. I'm playing Russia (Musowy H/A), and I've made around 2/3 of my conscription centers and my support limit is well over half a million men.

I'm thinking of starting a land war in Asia.

I always used to put it at 100%, until I discovered the high costs for artillery. Then I quickly changed my mind.:D

I can't help you with the second question, since in the entire game, no one has yet personally DoWed me. I guess they're scared of my large army. Though someone told me that if you put your slider back at 100%, you'll again reach your full morale the first of the next month. So if someone declares war at you December 31, your troops will be fully battle ready January the first.

Only when at war, ramping up for war, or when facing high revolt risk (lots of rebels). At all other times, I set it equal to 50%. The savings over the long run are quite significant and you can maintain a much larger force for the same cost.

A word of caution though. If someone DoW's you, don't forget to adjust that slider...and...then wonder why you keep losing land battles.:D...not that it ever happened to me....;)

Edit: Also, if someone DoW's you and you adjust the slider, it will take a month for your morale to reach its maximum. In almost all cases, it is advisable to wait for that max morale before attacking.:)

I thought I read somewhere that if you have maintenance at 50%, it would take three months for morale to recover to max if you adjust the slider to 100%. Am I wrong?

I think I read that too...but...from experience it only takes one month to recover the morale when going from 50% to 100%.

When you build new troops, it takes longer for them to get up to max morale though (I think about 3 months?). That might be what we are thinking about?

Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful.
