There is a certain remaster coming for another strategy game. One of the features i really like is that the ethnicity of the unit models reflect the location where they are recruited.

I would love a feature like this to be implemented in paradox games too, especially Europa universalis.

I can imagine that its too late to change the way unit models work in EU IV, but maybe its possible to have a unit of infantry adopt the culture and its unit sprite of the province where it is recruited. Also have the army reflect the unit skin of the culture that is the majority in an army just like with unit type.

Its lame to me to have all my armies look the same in my global empire and have none of my (colonial)armies represent the region they are from. It would be even more awesome to get a penalty system for having your units fighting other units of the same culture and have them rise up and join rebellions.

I like the idea of having each unit coded to be a certain culture (as long as there is an option to turn it off to avoid it slowing down the game for players with slow computers) as it adds a nice bit of flavour, but I don't think it should have actual tangible effects on army performance. From a historical point of view this era was quite famous for people killing people without discrimination (nationalism is one of the few concepts that has slightly altered this approach), and from a game point of view it adds a hectic level of micromanagement (in my opinion) to determine which army you should attack based on their culture.

I know Rome total war remaster is meant to be having these features, however I prefer the current system, although I would like to know why sometimes my English troops use colonial models and sometimes the normal model

I would like to know why sometimes my English troops use colonial models and sometimes the normal model
They use the colonial model when they're in colonial regions, and the normal model everywhere else.

What is the "certain game"?
Either way, i agree with the first post. I love unique unit models. In HoI3, where you play the game zoomed out, i specifically zoom in to get a look at every little special model. Halftracks and guys with bazookas and new tank models and everything. It's awesome. Really gives you a feeling of progression, and a sense of the scale of things when you have mountaineering guys in mountaineering gear on one side of the map, and guys with AT guns from the Baltic to the Black Sea on the other side...

...but not in EUIV. I even bought a couple of unit packs last month before starting a new game, only to find that there really isn't any reason to zoom in. It's such a simplistic military system. The little bits that matter, like terrain, can be seen from space. So i never bother to look.
It irked me for all of 5 minutes that my marines had the same generic models as everyone else, but then i never looked at them again.

I've seen in the Byzantium addon for Beyond Typus that unit models change model based on the continent in which they're standing at the time. While this isn't nearly as specific as province/culture, it reflects a multi-cultural and continental military force well through a cosmetic perspective. This also had no effect on performance, but would simply be rather tedious to add for every base unit type, and each unique one as well. I doubt that Paradox would ever do this, and their effort is probably better spent elsewhere. Neat idea for a mod though.

Historically this would depend heavily on the nation, with a trend of more homogeneous armies in later time frames due to increased professionalism.

Of course there would be exceptions like Austria that would eventually have armies that spoke around 9 different languages.
