I hope to see more unique units (cultural, and maybe faith ones too)

I really liked CK-s many knights, and the western unit sprites.

For Hungary, I would like the huszár (hussar/huszar, ect.), or an equivalent unit look.

"Description: Hussars in Hungary ceased to wear metal body armour; and by 1640 most were now light cavalry. It was hussars of this 'light' pattern rather than the Polish heavy hussar that were copied across Europe. These light hussars were ideal for reconnaissance and raiding sources of fodder and provisions in advance of the army. In battle, they were used in such light cavalry roles as harassing enemy skirmishers, overrunning cannon positions, and pursuing fleeing troops. The colourful uniforms of hussars of 1700 onwards were inspired by Hungarian fashions. This uniform usually comprised a short jacket known as a dolman, or later a medium-length "Attila" jacket, both with heavy horizontal gold braid on the breast, and gold Austrian knots on the sleeves; a matching pelisse (a short-waisted overjacket often worn slung over one shoulder); colored trousers, sometimes with gold Austrian knots at the front; a busby (a high fur hat with a cloth bag hanging from one side); and high riding boots."

I didn't made this thread only to suggest this, others should also post here what they would like to see in the game as units (or just its looks for flavor)

EDIT: last 2 picts are from the Golden Gate Park 2003 augustus 17 , on the day of Szent István

Yes,certain groups should have sort of unique units like janissaries of Ottomans.Fact is that nations HAD different kind of armies and UU is good way to show these differences.

If the provincial system work similiarly to CK... in that each province had different class arrangements... that would be cool..
I.E you could have heavy knights if the landholding system was fuedal... or if it was small holders you could have yeoman horse... or if it was tribal you could have tribal horse..
now that would be cool..
you might think twice before reforming everything to modern landholding (at least to early on) when you might loose some of your top units...

I think unique units should be culture and religion-dependent, and not nation dependent. That way, minor nations also get unique units, and even provinces could get unique units (if the CK army system is used).

BUT that it really will be interesting, and all the nations will have different uniforms, the other idea what I had should also be included:
in-game changeable colors of uniforms (+maybe the weapons too)

This is of course only for the flavor (it is easier to make only graph, and no game stat changes)
wink.gif

So, as USA would emerge it would have english units, but would have other (blue) uniform.

And with the changeing idea I had, the player could costumize the uniform later.

I don't care about different units. But I fear that too little attention has been paid to headgear. Where, alas, the type of hat was once a symbol of rank or occupation, EU was sadly generic.

I demand restitution of the proud and varied headgear of the Janissaries.

history704.jpg
Janissaries.jpg
400wm.UOL.3583210.7055475

That would be a sight worth seeing in 3D.

And I also found that the movement of troops in EU1 and EU2 did not adequately reflect their grace and elegance. Where, for example, are the sprites depicting these graceful gentlemen?

janissary-officer.jpg

So, please, not just different uniforms but gestures too. ;)

beautiful pictures tunch and emre, i think the 1st picture of the early archer is what i generally assume to be the most recognised image of a janissary. However i know during the period of suleyman I they wore long flowing white and were armed with scimitars, i'd like to see something like this represented.

My suggestions for Unique Units I would like to see in EUIII:

1. Highlanders for Scotland, the highlanders should have kilts and swords. Instead of uniforms and pikes, like in EUII. (for medieval and late medieval)
2. England, France, and the Spanish Kingdoms should have foot knights for their graphics, with the country's CoA on the shield. (for medieval and late medieval)
3. There should be graphics for Royalists and Parliamentaries in the English Civil War.
4. Knights of St. John and Teutonic Order should have custom graphics with the signs of their respective orders on their uniforms and shields. (medieval and late medieval)

You do realise that kilts as we know them are a 19th century invention?
Invented by an English king IIRC.

Provided that neither side is simply represented by rebels, how would you depict them differently?

Perhaps modern kilts, but Scots have been wearing kilts for centuries.

And about the Royalists and Parliamentaries. Royalists wore flamboyant clothes, big boots, and wide brimmed hats. Parliamentaries wore trousers and "casual" shirts, with thigh-high boots, and round helmets. The hat-helmet difference would be enough of a distinction IMO. I could look at a unit, see the big hat and say, "Oh, thats one of my Royalist armies." Likewise, I could look at the round, shiny helmets and say, "Oh, thats a Parliamentary army."

It could be potentially a surprise for you but XVI-XVII centuries Royal Scottish army did not wear kilts and swords as it was far from being consisted of only the wild Highlanders. The Scots are the Saxons, who would never wear such thingie as kilt – live with this. Sometimes the Crown really hired the Highland clans but it was not very often.

Welsh longbowmen
French musketeers
Japanese samurai
Kossacks
Jannisaries
Spanish conquistadors
Swiss guards

And so on.

Actually there was no conquistador unit as such. I mean, you cannot find in history a conquistador regiment or anything alike. It was more like a bunch of fellows eager to explore, plunder, colonize, conquer, each guy had his own motivations and they work independently.

I would mention the tercios rather than the conquistadores as a typical spanish unit.

The similarities of the infantry on both sides of the English Civil War* were actually (and rather boringly) remarkable similiar - which is to say there was no formal or standardised uniform at all. Which was why when someone had the bright idea of tying coloured ribbon to their hats it was a big advance for them.

As for the cavalry, at first both sides again had ad-hoc equipped forces, and noblemen, remember, who could afford to dress stylishly, were not particularly abundant - particularly on the front lines. Not only that, but it was not unknown for 'nobility' (or commoners) to fight on both sides: it wasn't a case of simply 'I'm upper class, therefore I'll fight for the king'. It was the Ironsides I believe who eventually started to regulate decent equipment.

Although having said that, I do remember reading about a unit of royalists who were all dressed completely in full plate armour and being the bane of the parliamentarians for a while because light arms couldn't take them out unless they were at very close range.

The myth that everyone wore the same is just that. After all, no one would think to dress everyone similarly prior to the war, (its not as if there was a clear societal divide either) why would they break out into similiar outfits once the fighting started? :D

*I say the English Civil War because the Euro's had come up with this idea a while ago. English military tech quite badly lagged behind the continent at that point.

I do NOT like the idea of unique units for a number of reasons:
1. It will cause arguments. "But hussars are clearly better than cossacks in every way!" and so on and so forth.
2. It will imbalance the game; the more custom units in a game the less balanced it is, typically, except in some truly great games.
3. The time-span of EUIII is great enough that player decisions would be able to make a huge impact on the unique units of different nations. What if when gunpowder came about in full, the Ottomans had decided to alter their tactics in a way different than they did? What if the French had decided to focus more on cavalry than on infantry? All of these are well within the realm of possibility and forcing Russians to use cossacks and English to use longbowmen really removes a large part of the diversity of good choices that the player can make. When longbowmen are clearly your best unit, choosing to use other units is simply handicapping yourself.

No, I think it would be far better to spend time on an army painter as in Warhammer 40k.
