I've already seen a couple of threads devoted to the admission/annexation/secession of US states, but has anyone got the skinny on how the unifications of Germany and Italy--probably the biggest political events between the Congress of Vienna and WW1--are going to take place?

Events?
Vassalization/Diploannexation?
A combination of the two?
And finally...is it me, or does di Cavour remind you of Newman from Seinfeld?

There's been very little word on actual game mechanics so far. Of course, the game was only announced 2 days ago.

Of course I do hope that the system will be flexible enough to allow other states to form the nucles for the new Germany and Italy, or that some states don't form part of the unification (after all, German speakers to this day still live in 3 separate states).

Regarding the unification of Germany. Denmark and Holland should theoretically be in danger of beeing absorb by "Germany" as Admiralstates. This was debated in the German assembly during the 19th century, becaus most german states lacked a navy. One of the German nationalistic songs has a phrase that says "from the Weser (River), to the Belt (Strait between the different parts of Denmark) Germans should unite (or something along those lines...). So there should be a chance of this happening (althoug a slim chance. And probably bigger for Denmark than Holland). One of the resons this didn't happen was that the Russians said no.

A bigger problem would be the British. I can't imagine the British allowing this to come to pass.

I think the Russians should have said "no" to the whole thing. Would have spared them millions and millions of lives ;)

I do think there should be the possibility the European powers stop Bismarck in his tracks. Bismarck had done a great deal of diplomacy to keep both Russia and Britain out of his war with France. I think a Prussian player who doesn't have good relations with Russia and Britain (or doesn't make the relations between France and these two countries even worse), should get a real problem when going to war with France and getting the gains he did IRL.

I hope so but I wonder..
Prussia was already very strong by the time of the German unification, it didn't increase their power by that much. Britain, Russia, and especially the United States can be seen as potential threats of an equal or greater magnitude. Also, Britain and Germany would make natural allies.

Admittedly. And in Germany in particular the only powerful german-speaking states of note were Prussie and Austria. But still, it shouldn't be outside the bounds of possibility to see a Austrian-led German unification.

And in Italy things would be much more up for grabs.

Option C should be possible as well...Austria-Hungary takes Southern Catholic Germany, and Prussia unifies the North and Rheinland. Saxony being up for grabs for either party.

That would be cool. The Germans killing each other and the Russians intervene to restore order to the German lands (and take over Silesia and Galicia when nobody's watching! :D )

Seriously, I think that there were so many possibilities that it shouldn't be a foregone conclusion that Germany unites under Prussia. It would be a shame to miss WWI, but if you make WWI inevitable no matter what, you rob gamers of the chance to form their own fortunes. There should be enough fighting as it is!

During the Franco-Prusso war Denmark almost declared war on Prussia! They wanted to retake lands lost during the war in 1964, but when France was beaten they dropped it. (It was a close call though). And who is to say if the great powers would had intervened if France had allready lost!

Of course it shouln't be a foregone conclusion, but it should be probable. Hey, the North German Union was already formed by the start of the game.

I don't think there needs to be a special WW1 event. Maybe there will be a huge war by that time, and maybe not, certainly it shouldn't be forced.

No offence, but I don't think Denmark would have made that much of a difference.

Dare I say that if Denmark joined the war, perhaps Germany would have won the first world war, as Prussia would have annexed Denmark and have a much better navy?
