I play with patch 1.04 and started as a 1 province count in France. My liege is the duke of toulouse and his liege is the king of france. I managed to get each county in the duchy of toulouse except the county of toulouse itself, because this belongs to my liege (his only county). I fabricated claims on it. Then I declared war on my liege to claim it. So my new direct liege was the king of france. Now everything was alrigth. But after I won the war and got the county of toulouse, I became independent, not only from my former liege the duke of toulouse (which is ok, because he had no demense left), but also from the king of france.
