The new head of Asano family speaks at a local NLP conference in Chugoku

... The National Liberal Party has been leading Nippon through the paths of glory for decades. Our legacy, the legacy of great Prince Date, is one of honor and patriotism, of strength and development. The ability to sacrifice for greater good, the ability to combine core Japanese values with the wonders of the modern thought – that what has always distinguished our movement. Voting for the NLP today you would voting for a strong and prosperous country, one that neither becomes a copy of Nanban nor falls into backwardness of isolation.

Reverence towards the Emperor and his divine authority. Sensible and effective government, understanding of our Imperial destiny. Progress and solidarity. Voting for NLP you vote for a better future..

- Colonel Asano Yoshinaga, second Marquess of Hiroshima

Ito Masaki awoke with a start. More dreams of blood and gore. He clutched at his head. There was a dull ache there that would not go away. He really should stop drinking tea before bed, but his servant kept insisting it'd help him sleep. So far it'd managed to put him out like a light every time, but it certainly didn't help the dreams. He supposed there was nothing that could be done about that.

Unable to fall back asleep, or perhaps unwilling, Masaki quietly slipped downstairs. Perhaps a light snack would help. As he descended the staircase and walked through the study, he noticed a door slightly ajar, a door that should never be opened. Masaki approached it with care. Once that room had held his father's morbid collection of stuffed Nanban. Of course it had been emptied since then, but no one ever went in there. It should have been locked and left alone. After taking a deep breath, Masaki opened the door.

The stench of feces and blood assaulted Masaki's nose and forced him to double over and gag. The sight wasn't much better. A mangled body lay right in the middle of the room. The limbs had been brutally hacked off the torso and tossed aside. Even the torso had massive gashes across the chest. Only the face remained untouched. The young woman, who Masaki recognized as one of his maids, had a permanent scream etched on her face. Masaki couldn't hold back anymore. He vomited all over the floor.

With his stomach emptied, Masaki immediately slammed the door closed. Who had murdered this poor woman? How did she get in that room? What could he do about it? The last was the only one he could answer himself. He considered getting the Ministry of Justice involved to investigate the crime, but immediately turned that down. His father's reputation still hung over him. If word got out a young woman had been murdered in his house, everyone would think he had done it. There was also the chance the real killer would use that against him. No, he had to keep this hush-hush. He'd find a way to hide the body and then do his own investigation. Someone was trying to scare him, or even worse frame him, but he would find the one responsible. Someone had to pay for taking that poor woman's life.

((Hey what happened to Jiyudo? Did it fall apart that badly?))

Election of 1893

Date Munenari was dead. That much everyone knew. Without their leader, the National Liberals went into panic mode. Date Munenari never really left an "heir" in the event of his death. Many speculated that the heir WOULD have been Asano Hisanori, but poor Asano was killed alongside Date at the Battle of Khabarovsk. That leaved little room for the National Liberals to decide who would succeed Date Munenari.

The opposition would have easily won this election with Date's death, but they were falling apart. Disgusted at the late Lord Mori's fraudulent scheme, many high-ranking Freedom Party members including Sakamoto Ryoma, and Kusanagi Miroki, all left the Freedom Party. By the start of the election, the Freedom Party was declared defunct. Most of these members joined the National Liberals. Whether it was to "take them down from the inside" or if "you can't beat them, join them" that caused them to go to the NLP, the new members drastically increased the power of the National Liberals tenfold.

The opposition that did stay together, the CDP and FLP, were on rocky ground too. Without funding, the CDP fell hard in the polls, but the FLP managed to actually do well. The FLP managed to get more seats this election then in the last election, while the CDP tanked in the polls. The former opposition was in shambles, with many wondering if they could ever recover from the fall of the Freedom Party.

The National Liberals were in a solid state, along with the Kamikaze Party. However, for the first time ever, the NLP had competition over its leadership spot. Two candidates emerged in this struggle. The first was General Yamagata Michitsura, the General responcible for the attack on Kamchatka during the war. General Yamagata was a rising star in the Imperial Army, and became the right-hand man for former General Asano Hisanori. Yamagata seemed like the perfect choice for the NLP leadership position. He was Date 2.0 in many ways, possessing a jingoist attitude and undying loyalty to the Emperor. He drew many NLP members to his side, and had the Moderates and Old Guard lock-step behind him. The other candidate was Satake Hiroshi. The good Dr. Hiroshi was a turncoat of the CDP that joined the NLP. Right from the start Satake had no chance. The fact that he just left the political enemies of the NLP, and now he was running for leadership, raised questions. Satake was not a staunch jingoist as well, which isolated him further from the rest of the party. He managed to secure some moderate votes, but was swamped by Yamagata. At the end of the day, Yamagata would become the leader of the National Liberal Party.

Yamagata would start off on a great foot, for he would oversee the NLP's largest victory ever. The NLP would win 72% of the Diet, over 340 seats, and would earn over 400 seats with the coalition. The CDP and FLP won a combined 60 seats, and the new reactionary Japanese Union of Nationalists winning 1 seat. Yamagata would start his political career with a mandate. Now, he had the daunting task of restoring order to Japan. He had a broken military to get fixed, hurt relations with his neighbors, and an increasingly unstable population still shocked at the death of Yamagata's predecessor.

Seeing that we now control a supermajority of the Diet, it only seems fitting that we revive the oft-neglected office of President of the Diet, so that we might be able to more effectively manage our coalition's direction under proper leadership. I invite any member of either party to put himself or another forward prior to a vote upon who should receive the proper nomination, after which it shall be put to the floor as a motion.

Dr. Satake Hiroshi, MP

I concur with Prince Sakamoto.
