Lord Tanabe's Diary, Date 5 May 1891
Mori, that deceitful little devil, deserved to die. It was with his election that the Freedom Party lost in 1886, it was with his betrayal of principles - allying himself with Republicans, Socialists and Anarchists - that the Freedom Party lost 1891 and it will be with his electoral fraud that the Freedom Party will dissolve. Maybe it is for the better of Japan, the Freedom Party had worked to divide Japan over the decisive leadership of Prince Date and the National Liberal Government. We can only hope that this will not have future implications on Japanese democracy, for albeit prestigous and noble, it is a fragile thing, it can be crushed even by a tender embrace.
Private - Letter addressed to the Interim Government,
Honourable Interim Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Advisers of His Imperial Majesty.
The threat the Empire of Japan faces is great, the British Army is on our islands, but far from our Empire's Heart - the factories of Kyushu and Kansai and the Palaces and Ministries of Edo - the British Navy is strong, but far from undefeatable, thus, I do not believe the threat we face is greater than the threat of the Russians and French in the Great Asian War, which leads me to concluded that although the situation may seem dire, our Government and People will neither falter or fail if we remain true and steadfast in the face of this danger, in which I, undoubtedly joined by my fellow Representatives of His Imperial Majesty, have the utmost confidence.
After I was appointed Ambassador of His Imperial Majesty and the Empire of Japan in London, the Marquess of Salisbury, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was very clear that his Government would not seek out diplomatic channels to end the armed conflict between our two nations until His Imperial Majesty's Government yielded its position of influence in many Asian nations and matters to the British, who seek to secure primacy in Europe with primacy in Asia - for it would secure the British "crown jewel", the resource and manpower rich lands of India, which could be exploited as a tool in future European conflicts. Thus, seeing there is no hope for equal position at the negotiating table, I advise His Imperial Majesty's Government to continue the armed conflict with the United Kingdom until atleast Japanese primacy in Asia is once again secured, for it is doubtfull that Marquees Salisbury and his Jingoistic Conservative Government will be in anyway willing to accept territorial loss unless the Japanese Imperial Navy has entered the Thames.
Lastly, I wish to ask His Imperial Majesty's Government to take actions securing Japanese Democracy from the dishonourable murders and fraud. It is imperative that we, those not chosen, make the way clear for our elected succesors, whoever they maybe, for this way will be walked for generations and I do believe that no member of His Imperial Majesty's Government wishes to see the return of the crimes committed in the two recent general elections.
Lord Tanabe Shinzou,
His Imperial Majesty's Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
