Second Attempt on Date's Life!
Thugs Try to Shoot Date

This afternoon, shortly after the death of Mori Takachika, Date Munenari was assaulted by ten thugs in an attempt on his life. The ten thugs shot at his car, but missed. The trained guards then dispatched the thugs, leading to their arrest/death. They claimed to have been told by a man they only knew as "Nanban Joe" to kill Date. While many point to the British or the Russians attempting this act, it is clear that it was someone in Japan who hired the men. This is the second attempt on Date Munenari's life since the Katashi plot a few years prior. Date Munenari's reaction may be similiar to what he did following the Katashi plot. The Emperor has already said he plans on addressing the nation following this assassination attempt, the fraud, and the death of Mori. It is clear though, the political situation in Japan is VERY dicy...

((Someone (who I shall not name) tried and failed to kill Riccardo))

After a great deal of deliberation, I have decided to withdraw from my support of the Constitutional Democratic Party. The current direction of the Opposition as a whole has led me to make this challenging decision, and it comes, then, with a second announcement- that is, that I will be moving across the aisle and joining the deputies of the National Liberal Party at this time.

Shimazu Narioki

Born: 21 August 1848
Specialty: Politics

Background: Younger brother to Prince Shimazu Tadayoshi, Narioki remained out of any sort of spotlight for the vast majority of his life. Attending Keoi University, Narioki studied law, finding it a fascinating subject, and a possible asset to his kin through these turbulent times of great change. Just the same as his clan, Narioki proved a staunch imperialist, and welcomed the new dawn brought upon by the Boshin War and the subsequent reign of Marshall Prince Date.

With the recent political chaos, Narioki has become a more prominent figure, denouncing what he coined "the Circus of Fools".

Name: Nakamura Isamu

Specialty: Military

Background: Nakamura Isamu was born in Choshu in 1861 to aristocratic parents. Although Isamu's father, a minor samurai, lost what little land he had after the Meiji Restoration, his support for the Imperial forces secured his political position in Choshu. Isamu, wishing to surpass his father in terms of political importance, chose to go into the military. He received a thoroughly modern education at Japan's finest military academy, and he quickly found a home within the nascent Imperial Navy. Isamu saw action in both the Great Asian War, during which he received a commendation for bravery and a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, and in the current conflict with Britain and Russia. Recently promoted to Captain, Nakamura Isamu hopes to drive back the filthy invaders and restore the glory of the Empire. Although he has so far managed to stay out of political affairs, Nakamura, being a military man, is fiercely patriotic and loyal to his homeland and Emperor, and he has no use for weak-willed defeatists back home.

Name: Itakshir Toyokawa
Born: Spring 1861
Ethnicity: Ainu
Ideology: Ainu Nationalist
Party: National Liberal Party
Class: Militarist

Bio: Itakshir Toyokawa was born sometime in the spring of 1861. Itakshir's father would amaze him with awesome stories of his people. Itakshir found a deep passion for the Ainu culture from these stories and his childhood would be spent studying the culture intensively; he liked to brag that he was the family's best dancer (a claim that his brother protests against). When he was 18 a group of Japanese merchants drank far too much for their own good. Some gunfire was exchanged and the next day Itakshir's father was found dead. Itakshir vowed vengeance for his father, and that no longer would allow the Ainu people to be oppressed. He enlisted in the military and served for several years as one of the highest-ranking Ainu officers. After a few years he returned to Hokkaido to marry and partake in some dancing. However, during the celebration thousands of British soldiers set foot on the island's shores and readied their rifles.

Life in the Hokkaido is about to change.

Chaos has returned to Japan after a time of peace and prosperity blossomed in our glorious nation. Fraudulent elections, assassinations, and partisan divide plague our proud island. In a time that all should unite against our common enemy, we are split further then ever before. The British and the Russians will not hesitate to exploit our weaknesses in the coming war.

The last election was filled with corruption and deceit, thus, we declare that the Election of 1891 is an illegitimate election. However in this time of war we cannot suffer another election, especially when partisan divide is at an all time high. Thus, an intermin government shall be established to maintain stability and order in Japan during the course of the war with the British. Their objective shall be to find a quick and easy end to the war before any more blood is spilled. This government shall dissolve upon a declaration of peace with the British and the Russians and new elections be held. Last, the Mori family, for their shameful attempt to grab power, shall be stripped of all their titles, including Counts of Chogoku.

Previously we knew that the opposition included men lacking both common sense or patriotism, now we see that has been led by a corrupt crook and a thief. He and his henchemen put their own ambitions above law, order, the will of the Monarch and the nation - this is unacceptable. Not that I am suprised. I applaud the decision of His Majesty to strip the House of Mori of all the peerages that have been granted to it. A betrayal of the Emperor and Japanese people is an act that deprived it of the right to present itself as nobility.

I must once again praise the courage and solid principles of Prince Date Munenari, who, despite all dirty insults of the Mori gang, has managed to investigate this plot.

((Private: Privy Council))

With the matter of the fraudulent election having been laid to rest, I believe now is the time begin setting the Empire back on the proper course; first and foremost among these is a need to re-build the Privy Council from its previous losses; to that end, I believe several extraordinary matters may need to be pursued.

First among these should be the elevation of men of proven loyalty to the Empire, known fidelity and honesty in all their dealings, and of sufficient experience to the peerage to be suitably positioned for a further appointment to the Privy Council. As of this moment, I propose that Kusaribe Kinzō and Yamagata Michitsura, for their exemplary service to the Empire both be elevated to the position of Count. Furthermore, the long-serving admiral and statesman Unryu Raizo shall be honoured with the rank of Baron.

To ensure a more immediate rectification of the lack of numbers within the Privy Council, I propose that Counts Tanabe Shinzō and Nishimura Masaru, being of sufficient rank already be inducted into the Privy Council following an immediate vote.

Furthermore, due to the deficiency of the supreme judicial body of the Empire, and this recent rise in lawlessness and chaos, I believe that a new Justice must be appointed. Thus, I suggest the appointment of Shimazu Narioki to that venerable body; as a man with notable legal experience, a truly genuine and vast love of the law, it would be a boon to the Imperial Courts.

((Election Rigging is something I should discuss in detail now that this has come to light

Basically if a party wants to, they can try and rig the election to get more seats. It is a very risky business for sure.

I take into account the party reform (currently secret ballots), and the closeness of the election (small difference leads to changes being less noticeable) and roll to determine the success of the rigging. If they succeed, I roll to determine how much VP they get to add to their party's total VP. Should they fail, or should an investigation as the one into this election come back with fraud, then the consequences are very bad. Usually they entail the election being called illegitimate, the party receving a penalty for the next election, and the persons involved getting arrested and loosing honors and whatnot. BIG RISKS FOR BIG REWARDS!

So yea, Qwerty got away with it at first, but the investigation came back busting him))

Lord Tanabe's Diary, Date 5 May 1891

Mori, that deceitful little devil, deserved to die. It was with his election that the Freedom Party lost in 1886, it was with his betrayal of principles - allying himself with Republicans, Socialists and Anarchists - that the Freedom Party lost 1891 and it will be with his electoral fraud that the Freedom Party will dissolve. Maybe it is for the better of Japan, the Freedom Party had worked to divide Japan over the decisive leadership of Prince Date and the National Liberal Government. We can only hope that this will not have future implications on Japanese democracy, for albeit prestigous and noble, it is a fragile thing, it can be crushed even by a tender embrace.

Private - Letter addressed to the Interim Government,

Honourable Interim Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Advisers of His Imperial Majesty.

The threat the Empire of Japan faces is great, the British Army is on our islands, but far from our Empire's Heart - the factories of Kyushu and Kansai and the Palaces and Ministries of Edo - the British Navy is strong, but far from undefeatable, thus, I do not believe the threat we face is greater than the threat of the Russians and French in the Great Asian War, which leads me to concluded that although the situation may seem dire, our Government and People will neither falter or fail if we remain true and steadfast in the face of this danger, in which I, undoubtedly joined by my fellow Representatives of His Imperial Majesty, have the utmost confidence.

After I was appointed Ambassador of His Imperial Majesty and the Empire of Japan in London, the Marquess of Salisbury, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was very clear that his Government would not seek out diplomatic channels to end the armed conflict between our two nations until His Imperial Majesty's Government yielded its position of influence in many Asian nations and matters to the British, who seek to secure primacy in Europe with primacy in Asia - for it would secure the British "crown jewel", the resource and manpower rich lands of India, which could be exploited as a tool in future European conflicts. Thus, seeing there is no hope for equal position at the negotiating table, I advise His Imperial Majesty's Government to continue the armed conflict with the United Kingdom until atleast Japanese primacy in Asia is once again secured, for it is doubtfull that Marquees Salisbury and his Jingoistic Conservative Government will be in anyway willing to accept territorial loss unless the Japanese Imperial Navy has entered the Thames.

Lastly, I wish to ask His Imperial Majesty's Government to take actions securing Japanese Democracy from the dishonourable murders and fraud. It is imperative that we, those not chosen, make the way clear for our elected succesors, whoever they maybe, for this way will be walked for generations and I do believe that no member of His Imperial Majesty's Government wishes to see the return of the crimes committed in the two recent general elections.

Lord Tanabe Shinzou,
His Imperial Majesty's Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

I ask for investigations for all the families of the known assasins, since I believe that they might be working for the British and the Russians, maybe even the Chinese. We should not allow such scum to infiltrate Japan and ruin it from the inside.

Kano Tetsuo was tasked with settling peace with the Russian Empire. This was not an easy task, especially because of the British occupation of Japanese Philippines and Hokkaido the Russians knew that this war was in their favour for now. Even though Japanese soldiers killed 12,000 Russians in Sakhalin and has held the line in Korea the British could advance further into Japan at any moment. But the Japanese people stood together to drive out the British from their homeland. He had to do everything he could to settle peace with the Russians to relieve the soldiers in Korea.

"Gentleman, I stand before you in the name of the Divine Emperor of Japan. I wish to speak about a possibility for peace between our great nations.
I want to ask a simple question: Is the island of Sakhalin worth the death of so many brave citizens? Years of history have taught us that war brings nothing else then death and suffering, while peace allows prosperity and stability. Many have suffered already and many more will face the same fate if we are not to stop this petty squabble over an island. So I ask you: Stop this madness! The people of our nations deserve a much better fate then this."

(A letter to the Interim Government)

Most Honourable Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Advisers to His Imperial Majesty,

Russian advance into Korea and the island of Sakhalin has been stopped for now. Their army is numerous, but we have defeated them in the past.
That is why I believe we can defeat them again. And even IF Korea was to fall they still have to cross the sea to strike into the heart of the Empire. We also cannot forget that an army of such size can't be equipped with the latest weapons. We can win this war, if we stand together to fight the enemies of our glorious nation.

As His Imperial Majesty's Ambassador I have been tasked with negotiating a peace between Our nation and the Russian empire. Unfortunately it seems that the Russian government is unwilling to step out of this pointless war. They believe that the war is undecided, and that their coalition can win this. They will not negotiate unless they win decisively or they are crushed completely. They desire Sakhalin, and will not stop unless they get it back, which is of course unacceptable. That is why I must call for continuation of the armed conflict. The Russian menace understands only brute force, and wishes to see their citizens suffer. I say we give them what they want.

Lastly, I wish to address the recent events concerning the electoral fraud. Actions must be taken to ensure that events like this will not happen in the future. Preventive measures must be taken, or else this might happen once again.

Kano Tetsuo
