Having grown tired of the constant political infighting among the ineffectual and stubbornly pacifistic Freedom Party, Otuma Makato leaves the party, standing as an Independent candidate in the upcoming elections.

*Lord Satake, seeing that his term is expiring, makes his way back to Tohuku whilst carrying an odd package. Before he departs, he urges his fiery grandnephew to enter politics and to bring glory to the Satake Clan*

Name:

Dr. Satake Hiroshi

Date of Birth:
October 31, 1864

Biography:
Born into a family of great history and strength, Hiroshi was always held to high standards. He had been born after the Boshin War, and that reflected most in his education, for the Satake Clan, now freed from its obligations as a Shogunal vassal and symbol of the Shogunate's stability, was then able to expose its most gifted children to a Western education- of whom Satake Hiroshi was the brightest. His Japanese heritage was not ignored, however, and the young boy was taught traditional arts from the way of the sword to the proper mannerisms that belonged to the aristocracy.

Once he had turned fifteen, he entered the tutelage of the Dutch ambassador to Japan, who instructed him not only in Dutch, but through the aid of his American wife (who was herself the sister of the American consul in Edo,) in English. It was through these ties that Hiroshi was later encouraged to pursue a more advanced education in the United States. At the urging of his mentor, the headstrong young adult traveled to the United States and enrolled in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. It was there that he studied surgery and developed a new outlook upon the future of Asia as a whole, with the staunch belief that the only way for Japan or any East Asian nation to overcome the wealth and prosperity of the West is to unite under one banner in the name of mutual strength.

Upon his return, Dr. Satake traveled to Kyoto to meditate at a Zen Buddhist temple prior to visiting the Diplomatic Quarter. It was there that, witnessing the dedication of the monks to an ascetic lifestyle and care for the poor, he decided to open his clinic in the slums of Kyoto. He quickly grew to be a popular figure in the area and, upon the death of his kinsman, Lord Chief Justice Satake Yoshizane, provided lodging and care for the elderly Lord Satake Yoshihiro. Seeing his great-uncle leave, Dr. Satake has decided to throw his hat into the ring and run to represent the slums of Kyoto in the Imperial Diet.

Perhaps we should consider revising the pacifist nature of our party to anti-military?

Yesterday, June 7 1891 - a date that will live in infamy - Japan was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the Empire of Great Britain. The Japanese people were at peace with that nation, and at the solicitation of the British were recently in conversation with their government and their Queen to promote the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. It will be recorded that the distance from Hokkaido to England makes it obvious that this attack was deliberately planned months ago. During that time the British Government has deliberately sought to deceive Japan by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territories and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the Japanese people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

Upon the battle ahead, the entire future of Japanese civilisation rests. Upon it depends our Japanese way of life, and the long continuity of our institutions and Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy has been turned upon us. Victoria knows that she will have to break us in these islands or lose the war. If we can stand up to her, then all of Asia may be freed and the life of the world may move forward to broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, the light of the world, including Japan, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into an abyss of a new dark age of servitude to the sinister Gaijin and their perverted sciences.

Therefore let us brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that if the Japanese Empire should last a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour".

Yamamoto Gonnohyoe
Count of Nagasaki

Reactions:
As there has been no declarations of intent to run for party leadership the Radical Progress Party elects Murayama Kuri as Leader and the proposed platform of Protectionism/State Capitalism/Anti-Military/Pluralism/Residency.

As my first act as leader of the Radical Progress Party I propose that we, in order to more easily attract and represent our constituencies, change the name of the party to the Farmer-Labor Party (Nōmin-rōdō-tō). This new name will allow us to refocus our efforts to defend the rights and economic prosperity of Japanese farmers and industrial laborers. I must put this to a party wide vote, my friends. Thank you.

Nothing is heard of Iroh Hirotaka, the Governor General of the Phillipines.. Rumors have it he has been captured and is imprisoned in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as a high ranking political prisoner...

((Since I probably was in the Phillipines at the time of the invasion , I assume it is only logical I have been captured by the British))

Platform of the National Liberal Party, 1891

The Empire of Japan has in these few years of peace we have been granted prospered; our economy is growing faster than it has in decades, our workers are all employed, and our people are fed and happy; even the perfidious invaders have been contained in short order; the National Liberals shall, if re-elected, continue to drive back the invaders, and continue to win Japan honour in the field and prosperity at home! Shall we trust the leaders of bickering coalitions, unable to work in unity with one another, to lead our armies to triumph, or to direct our economy, or to provide good, effective governance? Why then shall we change course, in time of both prosperity and conflict? The National Liberal Party, the party of victory, growth, and progress, the party that has governed Japan for a generation with unimaginable success, the party that triumphed over the French, the Italians, the Russians, and the Spaniards, the party that made Japan what it is; vote for the National Liberals, and continue this strong and proud tradition.

Platform of the Farmer-Labor Party, 1891
Friends and comrades, farmers and industrial workers, now is a pivotal election for our Japanese nation. The Farmer-Labor party is fighting alongside our friends in the Kensei Minshutou and the Jiyudo Party to unseat the 35 year reign of the National-Liberal Party and the Dateist Oligarchy. The National-Liberals are the protectors of big business and imperialism. If you are a man of Japan who loves his native country and does not wish to see its sons sacrificed in meaningless wars vote for the Farmer-Labor Party. If you are a man of Japan who knows of the strength of our agricultural and peasant past and wishes to strengthen our peasantry vote Farmer-Labor! We will support agricultural subsidies and strict land redistribution to our peasants in order to raise every man up to his highest potential and to increase our agricultural production in order to feed every man of Japan and end our shameful reliance on foreign markets! If you want to see the government support trade unions and the end of the shameful practice of appointing members of the upper house, vote Farmer-Labor!

Rise, men of Japan to the polls to ensure the economic stability, international peace, and independence of the Japanese nation. Vote Farmer-Labor!
