Having finished my review of our current standing army, I am disturbed by the corruption evident in its senior ranks. Using my power as War Adviser, I order the cleansing of the officer corps and appoint the loyal samurai Takeda Saburo as the Chief of the Japanese Army. I give him permission to fill the recently vacated positions with recruits of his choice. Two new brigades of rifle-armed ashigaru will also be trained and armed in Chubu. I suggest my fellow Roju follow my example and continue to build up their regional forces in preparation for further attacks by the Nanban.

~ Ota Sukekatsu; 3rd Lord Fureno Shizuoka, Roju Representative of Chubu & War Adviser of Nippon

The honourable Ota-san is too kind. At his request I will accept my appointment as Chief of the Nippon Army, for there is much work to be done in said army. Even in the loyal armies of Chubu, I saw senior and junior officers alike carry pistol-weapons with origins unknown. How can we be certain of the loyalty of our officers when they accept "gifts" from the Nanban? From past experience we can quite clearly note that such gifts always come with the expectation of service in return. Unfortunately, I cannot imagine this situation to be any better in the Southern parts of Japan.

In order to preserve the integrity of our forces and to shield them from the temptations of Nanban influence, I advise the honourable members of the Roju council to take the production of firearm weaponry into our own hands and not allow the Nanban such leverage over our armed forces. Step by step, industry will take over our country; this is inevitable. It is your responsibility to guide its emergence and shape the industry of Nippon to fit our culture and our ways. There is no need for a clothes factory to craft "jeans" when it can craft a kimono and so be of service to our established ways. Similarly, we need not rely on the imports of flawed weaponry from vermin which considers itself our superiors when our factories, Nippon's own factories, can reliably produce pistol-weapons for our officers and rifles for our soldiers.

I plead to the Roju council to, in all their wisdom, strive towards blending such advanced industry into our established culture.

- General Takeda Saburo

Seeing as the Shogun, filling an office as ancient as his, surely understands the necessity of the reforms proposed by the Lord Ota-san and myself and the dangers posed by Nanban influence over our armed forces, I humbly ask him to consider the War Adviser's suggestion and name a new Chief of the Nippon Army, one willing to combat corruption and support far-reaching reforms.

My loyal Chancellor

For the past fifteen years of my reign, Japan has been involved in wars, unfair treaties, Nanban control, and the threat of falling behind. Yet for the sake of order and stability, the Shogun and his cronies in the Roju have abandoned our traditionalist ways, forcing the people to adopt Nanban technology, Nanban culture, Nanban beliefs, and Nanban religion! Who is to blame in all this my loyal Chancellor Mori? Why it is the same men who claim they defend tradition! The Shogun and his Roju are nothing more then cronies to the western powers! Even the most traditionalist Roju members like Lord Date and Lord Takeshi believe that abandoning tradtion is the way "forward". I see men and women in Kyoto wearing western clothing. Smoke from Nanban factories in Edo choke the air. Nanban ships frequent the sacred port of Osaka, and the Roju and Shogun let this happen!

I have been silent for fifteen years Lord Mori. My ancestors have been silent to this encroachment by the Shoguns for over seven-hundred years! No more, Lord Mori. No more shall I sit here and watch my land be destroyed and tainted by the Nanban. We must prepare to strike back against the Nanban and their cronies in Edo! We however, must be patient. The time will come when the Japanese people wish to see the yolk of the Nanban thrown off of them. We cannot rush this decree, it must come at the precise moment. All I am asking, my loyal Chancellor, is that you must be willing to stand by me, and defend the Divine will against anyone who dares threaten it and Japan's traditions.

-Emperor Komei
Dear His Majesty Emperor Komei of Nippon.

I agree with your sentiments completely. The nanban have overrun our nation, raped our women, invaded our army, and took our way of life away. The Reformists and Modernists have snuck the nanban into our nation. Europe is sending rapists and opium dealers across our borders illegally and you know why? Because they know the modernists will defend the nanban till the end. The nanban have already purchased the Roju and they might soon the same with the Shogun as well.

I urge that you expel all the nanban from Nippon immediately. I urge you to declare that war is not allowed in Nippon. I urge you to stop the nanban Tairo we have right now from destroying Nippon. Only you have the power my Lord to save Nippon and to preserve tradition and peace. My Emperor we have been out-nanbaned, and mark my words we will never be out-nanbaned again.

- Your loyal Daijo-Dajin Mori Takachika
It is time for Chugoku's armies to be modernized and expanded to match the standard set by the other regions of Nippon and as such Chugoku shall do this. A port will also be built in Okayama to allow the further strengthening of Nippon's navy.

~ Daimyo Ōshiro Kazuki of Okayama, Roju of Chugoku and Tairō of Nippon

((Replace all irregulars with regulars. If more regulars can be built, then build them. Also construct a port in Okayama.))
((public))
This is an outrage! Europe is sending rapists and opium dealers across our borders and your first concern is to nanbanize the army? You disgusting and vile creature! You destroy Nippon and disgrace our way of life! You believe that warmongering is good and peace is bad, but like all modernists you are nothing but another nanban suckler bought out by some French merchants. The people of Chogoku are going to be sent off to die in vain because you are trying to compensate for your small endowment your nanban-tickling barbarian!

Join me Nippon! Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians.

Oshiro (1856-1861): The End of an Era

((There is a reason why I went five years instead of three which will be told after the update))

Daimyo Oshiro Kazuki, the Lord of Okayama, would be the man to step up and fill the shoes of former Tairo-titan Satake. Lord Oshiro's ascent though was met with praise by the Westernizers, who have now succeeded in obtaining the position of Tairo. Even many Thunder Alliance men such as Lord Takeshi and Lord Motoro wanted Oshiro in power. It was clear to Oshiro that his mandate was secure, and the Westernizers had finally obtain true power.

Things were very quiet. Oshiro pressed the Noble Education Act, an act proposed by Lord Ota two years prior. The Act passed, but it was met with heavy resistance by the Traditionalist elements of Japan. This reform faced more resistance then any reform before it. Yet it still passed, and the reforms were put into effect. The education system was revamped, and the country received a healthy boost of literacy. That was basically all that happened majorly in Oshiro's time as Tairo.

Yet, militarization continued across Japan. The Lords of Japan continued to raise troops and did so at a fast rate. Lord Yamamoto would order eight infantry and two cavalry, yet he had to settle with two cavalry and one infantry unit. Lord Oshiro modernized the army of Chugoku, completely removing the irregulars that were being used by his army and replacing them with infantry. Lord Date though would make the biggest gains. He would order three massive man of wars, the biggest ships Japan had ever seen. Shikoku was now a steadfast naval base, with no true way for any rival nation to attack it. It was a stronghold.

Things though went bad for the United States, the overlords of the Japanese. They were embroiled in a Civil War between North and South. Slavery had finally split the nation in half, and the US turned a blind eye towards the Asian sphere to focus on fighting this war. During this time, Korea, a neighbor of Japan and China, offered an alliance with Japan. Korea and Japan have had a rocky relationships over the years. Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea, which ended in utter disaster. Korea though seemed to forget that, and offered an alliance to the Japanese, which the Shogun accepted.

The Shogunate also suffered during this time. In 1858, Tokugawa Iesada died. His successor was Tokugawa Iemochi. Iemochi was much like Iesada, very hesitant to overthrow the Nanban in Japan, even while America was fighting itself. Yet, Japan pushed on into the new decade of the 1860s. Near the end of the year 1860, a new breed of political beliefs would surface in Europe, and make its way to Japan, Socialism. Socialism was not really popular in Japan. It was an odd belief, it did not really go hand in hand with modernization or tradition. It was in a limbo almost. No one knew where to put it, and no one knew whether to make it legal or not.

Yet, these events, these are NOTHING compared to what Japan is about to face next. Japan was in for a rocky ride, a culmination of the past twenty-five years. War was brewing...
