HOLY. SHIT.

I was just thinking that TH's next IAAR should be set in Japan and now I found out that there already is a Japanese IAAR.
And I missed the start!

And apparently we already had a Communist Samurai and there's a proposal to silently overthrow the Tokugawas. I don't know how well the guys in Edo are going to react to this...

Anyway, if I can, I'll reserve the Toyama Province for my mostly custom Clan. I'll post my character soon enough.))
((I hope you're talking about Seita, because I'm not a communist, I'm a socialist republican pro-democracy and simpatizer of monarchy samurai. Also, I don't have much options about what to do now. When will my trial start? If I even have a trial of course... ))

"Asahi adventures in prision"

"Privade: Asahi's thoughs"
Sigh... Japan is going from bad to worse. Those Daimyos think they can kill anyone just because he opposed them. Those new acts are horrible too. The only decent one is the goverment reformation act. However, it's still far from a true change. I think they should put a system were the Emperor chooses a candidate within the daimyos, and the rest of them vote to decide wheter or not he becomes the next Shogun. Also, the Shogun should be a limited time in power. That's the closest thing to a democracy Japan can have for now. The acts about Japan army are not bad neither. The Emperor rescue... or wahtever it's called... it's ridiculous. It doesn't make any sense. They're just ending with Japanese citizens rights. Now they are banning to share some ideals. They're banning to think some things. And let's not forget, it's not democratic, because prisioners won't even have a fair trial. Hmm... things look dark for me. I wonder where's Seita-san. I wish he were here with me. That way we would be both executed. He deserves it. I don't...

This "Reformation of the Government of Japan" is a disaster. It hurts my eyes even looking at it. While I am certain that the Daimyos will not be foolish and overwhelmingly oppose this, it would be an insult to even present this to the shogun. So, I will exercise the powers of the Roju and call a "veto" (the barbaric word leaves an awful taste in my mouth saying it) against the proposal.

I'm surprised the Shogun is permitting these acts to be discussed at all. Most of them either infringe on his powers or outright overthrow him. I approve of reform, but this is not the right direction.

Have you lost your wits? You would vote against an agreement which would allow us to bring our full strength to bear upon the 共和党の Kyōwatō no movement. Clearly you are no true Daimy else you would support the Emperor and Shogun in this move to prevent their disposal.

I advise you to vote "YES" to the Save the Emperor Agreement.

If you must know, I abstained on that proposal not because I am against the Emperor or agreed with the ideology presented, but rather because I could not support the witch-hunt that would ensue following the passing of this act. Executing people simply because they are suspected of sympathizing with radical ideas is not a wise decision. We would see countless people executed for petty reasons that have nothing to do with ideology. We should deal with the obvious traitors first and sift out the rest without such violent means.

The agreement suggests a fair trail for all. This is in fact far better then many would receive if this agreement is not implemented. Clearly you misunderstand; the only reason that anybody would executed due to this agreement is if they were found guilty of せいた 共和主義 Seita-Republicanism practise of which is already a crime. My agreement simply allows for more efficient control of the movement.

((Well...

This doesn't make any sense.
This is Feudal Japan you know? Nobody knows what Socialism is, nor they can know it because it doesn't exist yet and won't arrive to Japan for the next sixty years. "Democracy" is Ikko Ikki nonsense that grants you a one-way ticket to the chopping block, and that's it. Republicanism is synonymous with Satanism as it imply taking out the Emperor and that's not going to be well received in Feudal Japan. The Shogun, the Emperor and the Daimyos all rule by divine right, own the peasantry and there's no concept of people's right, which is an entirely western idea that has yet to be introduced to a very xenophobic Japan.
I'm hardly an expert of Japanese history during the 19th century, but I'm sure enough that any low Samurai speaking in such a manner of rights and Democracy before western ideas became more or less widespread would be considered pretty mad, branded as traitor, have his title revoked, and his head too.

I'll end the OOC now, there's already too much of it in this thread. My character will be posted soon.))

((Come to think of it, the number of Japanese who would even have enough knowledge of the outside world to actually understand what the concepts of republicanism and democracy were in 1836 would be restricted to a tiny, almost minute number of merchants and intellectuals who did business in Dejima from time to time. To have a character who identified as a supporter of both and who lived and worked outside of that region in 1836 would be highly unrealistic, just saying.))

Name:
Toyama Norogumi
DoB: 17th December 1797 (41)
Class: Daimyo
Province of Control: Toyama, Chubu
Background:

Emblem of the Toyama Clan

Toyama Norogumi is the current leader of the Toyama Clan, rulers of the Etchu province since the Tokugawas took over the Shogunate in 1600. His family has been a traditional ally of the Shogun, but with the winds of change growing stronger and stronger over the Japanese Islands this loyalty might not survive the coming storms.

Norogumi is for the most part a Traditionalist, he strongly distrusts foreigners and believes them unworthy to set foot upon the Holy Land of Nippon, however he recognizes the strength of their firepower and would be ready to kill in order to get his hands on Western Cannons and Ships. To him Japan should not really modernize (and certainly not "Westernize") but rather simply adopt the newer technologies and abilities of the West, make them properly Japanese and then inevitably overcome the barbarians with the superior skills of the Japanese people. The traditions themselves and the spirit of the Japanese nation should never be changed in the face of the barbarians' advance however.

Toyama Noroguni my friend; I hear that you are a Traditionalist. Why not take my advice and consider aligning yourself with Unity & Honour?

~ Yoshito; 1st Lord Fureno-Shizuoka
((No, judging from his description he's no Luddite, and would probably be best suited to the Raijin/Thunder Alliance.))

Yoshito looked down at the paper that was placed before him. It was clearly some sort of informative report for the nobility as it was written, with great skill, in Kanji. It spoke of the troubles with Seita Kyowa-shugi and of how the Daimyo appeared to have abandoned the Emperor. He liked that it spoke of him as a saviour struggling to convince his uncaring fellows. He liked it so much that he decided to give the writer patronage in return for having a free copy delivered to all the Daimyo of Nippon.

MUTINY IN THE RANKS!!!

Today at the Imperial Courtmultiple Daimyo have voted against legislature that would greatly benefit the Emperor.Leading political experts believe that this move is likely because many of the Daimyo would be prosecuted if the agreement passed.

The Save the Emperor Agreement has been devised by FurenoYoshito in an attempt to slow, or even reverse, the spread of Seita Kyowa-shugi. Unfortunately for Lord Fureno many Great Daimyo including 3Roju Members: Mori Takachika, Lord Hosokawa & UesugiNarinori; the last of which was a great surprise to all as he had previously supported the act.

The agreement sees the formal recognition of Seita Kyowa-shugi as a political movement. The two instigators of the movement TarouSeita & Asahi Daika would immediately be executed and the movement made illegal. Seita Kyowa-shugi involves the disposal of the Emperor and installation of a President who is elected by the populace. Clearly the two who began the movement are insane; not understanding that the Emperor is a divine being; as the Daimyo were only too happy to point out.

The first that the Court knew of the movement was when the traitor Seita sent a cynical message to all the Samurai and Daimyo of Nippon. Quickly realising the treasonous rubbish that the letter contained all of the Emperor faithful servants reported it. Seita never travelled to Kyoto for fear of capture, indeed he has now fled to the Portugeuse colony of Macao. Daika travelled to the Court upon receiving the letter; he quickly declared that he supported the ideology expecting his fellows to quickly follow suit but his reception was cold. He fled for the nearest port but was arrested by Tokugawa agents en route. He now awaits his trail before the Shogun.

Currently the advice the Daimyo Council is preparing to give the Shogun is that the legislature should be "failed". Currently the Daimyo: Mori Takachika; UesugiNarinori; Lord Hosokawa &ShimazuNarioki advise against it while Daimyo: MatusiHedeki; FurenoYoshito & Abe Masami believe that it should be implemented.

With the Daimyo Council extremely close on the topic (3:4) in terms of Daimyo but certainly against it in terms of actual influence (3:8) the Council could go either way with over 2/3rds left to make their decision.

The Daimyo of Toyama will now address the proposals put forward by some of the Daimyos of the country and suggest a possible course of action for the assembled Daimyos.

Nippon Army Act: No
Regional Armies Act: No

The Daimyos and the Shogun have led the armies of Nippon for ages without all these needless bureaucratic complications, I fail to see the necessity to introduce these things now. Let us keep bureaucracy out of the way of the warriors, so that it may not distract them from their duties.

Save the Emperor Agreement: YES

I believe that this is one of the most important thing we Daimyos should discuss today.
We all assisted to the degenerate ramblings of the vile Seita and Daika, such filthy blasphemies were not heard since the times of the Ikko Ikki and what is worse is that these dishonorable scoundrels used to be considered Samurai, loyal servants of the Empire! While the swine Seita has already fled, showing both his cowardice and the madness of his cause, we must make sure that these blasphemies may never be spread again, we don't want a new version of the Ikko Ikki stirring up the peasantry and throwing the nation into chaos!

All supporters of Kyōwashugi and Seita's Teachings must be formally and solemnly condemned, hunted down and mercilessly exterminated! The Empire must be protected by these mad fanatics and Western-lovers who wish nothing but social upheaval and moral ruination of the people!

War Adviser Act: No

More needless complications! We don't need these.

Reformation of the Government of Japan: No

I hope that everyone here understands that we are discussing a coup here. The Tokugawas might be both patient and honorable, but they won't stand idle while the Daimyo take away the honor of the Shogunate from their Clan! This decision will certainly throw the nation into Civil War! Just discussing it would be reason enough for the Shogun to storm this house and arrest all its supporters!
The Clan Toyama will make it clear here and now that it stands loyal to the Heavenly Order of the Empire of Japan and with the Shogunate, and that it doesn't intend to throw the nation into another Sengoku Jidai. To other Daimyos I urge extreme caution.

This is all I have to say.

- Toyama Norogumi,
Daimyo of Etchu

I see the Lord Fureno's skill with words truly has no parallel... for he has unilaterally altered the definition of treason overnight from "one who betrays the Emperor" to "one who votes against one of his scurrilous pieces of legislation." Perhaps the real reason Lord Fureno seeks to "reform" the Government of Japan is so that he may have himself installed as Shogun?

-- Hosokawa-dono, Lord of Higo and Roju of Kyushu

((I'd just like to point out that if we could vote on the execution of the two aforementioned traitors, my character would probably vote in favour.))
