Name:
Asano Hisanori
Specialty: Military
Background:

Born in 1841 near Kyoto, young Asano belongs to the junior branch of the princely Asano family that, before the Boshin wars, ruled in Hiroshima. His father, Asano Hisamitsu, was, however, only a wealthy samurai and an official of the Imperial Court, who has reached the illustrious rank of the Provisional Assistant Keeper of Royal Gardens. From his parent, who, despite his daymio connections, did not like the Bakufu system much, the boy has inherited the reverence to the Emperor and the belief that he should run things, not the Shogun or his councilors. However it did not stop the youth from adhering to the traditional ways, such as Bushido - and in fact becoming a great expert on its rules and a master of the sword as he grew up. When he was nineteen, Hisanori was already running his fencing school, which, in many ways, functioned as a social and political club, which helped him to build many of his future connections. Due to insistence of his influential relatives, Hisanori however replaced the blade with a quill and joined the swarm of Edo bureaucrats, becoming Junior Deputy Subinspector of Public Works.

However, when the Boshin War started, he eagerly picked up the deadly weapons again. First as a field officer within the regiments of Chugoku and then as an aide attached to the personal staff of Lord Date, Asano served against the forces of Shogunate - and was twice wounded in the battle of Yokohama, getting a quite commendable reputation. After the war he worked as a secretary to the new Chancellor, Date Munenari - and later executed the office of a prefect in Chubu. His career was started in quite a promising way - but a certain fact hindered it.

Asano Hisanori was neither an opportunist nor a hater of traditions. He was one the people that fought for the Emperor, not total Westernization. He saw Shogunate as weak and corrupt and serving the Nanban powers, he believed that modernization is needed in many spheres, but... that Nippon should remain Nippon, based on honor and old ideals. While seeing Lord Dato as a great hero, he could not agree with the total dismantlement of the Han system (preferring at the point to see it reformed and centralised) and was sad about the quarrels with the Samurai class. In 1864 he attended the funeral of his elderly Uncle, Asano Naritaka, who was under Satake a Bakufu Military Advisor and Daymio of Hiroshima. The man died childeless -and the headship of the family has passed to Hisanori. In addition to the legacy, he inherited lucrative manors in Chugoku which made him a rich man - and let retire from governmental service and start the enjoyable life of a landowner.

He once again put on military uniform briefly to fight the mercenaries of Mutso Ishiro - and in 1870 became a deputy of the Diet. "Emperor, Kami, order, honor, military might!" - was often a main topic of his speeches. He opposed the radical reforms that would dismantle the Japanese way of life - but at the same time saw pacifism, ignorance and isolationism as degenerative tendencies. During the Bussan incident, Asano Hisanori was among the most aggressive supporters of the war with Korea. "Bring the wrath of the Emperor upon their heads - or we would be a laughing stock for the whole world! Avenge the insult to our national banners! Make them understand that Nippon is not a whipping boy of the Shogunate times!" - he roared before the national assembly. When the invasion stated, he rejoined the army and fought under his old patron Date, reaching the rank of Rikugun Taisa. There are some rumors about atrocities - but mainly people speak about his prowess and bravery in battles, as well as the fact that his regiment managed to get out of the campaign with the minimal losses

Now Asano Hisanori believes that the time has come to make another step up - but only the Ancestors know what awaits him.

Some facts about Hisanori:

- Dislikes Nanban, but likes their technologies, especially ones that kill people. Reads much about political processes and scientific development in the Western world
- Wears Japanese traditional dress, when not in uniform, believes that the love for suits, ties and other Western outfits is not only degrading, but comical
- Believes in the expansionist mission of Japan and would like to see it as an empire lording over all nearby regions
- Is a devoted Shinto follower and does not think much of Buddhists
- Is a realpolitiker from his toes to his head

((I'm not 100% sure what happens in this situation, just wanted to let you and Naxhi know that we both wish to begin construction of the same factory in the same province.))
((I asked mrlifeless and lief to give me a value of how much they value the factory. Mrlifeless values it at 7.5K, liefwarrior values it at 50,000. Thus, since liefwarrior values it more, he gets to build there

EDIT: Liefwarrior though will pay an extra 8K since that is how much he would have paid to outbid mrlifeless.))

To solve a dispute over land space, Hajamoto and Kusaribe Zaibatsu will form a joint company involving Kyushu glass factory and the glass factory to be built by Kusaribe Zaibatsu in Kanto.
This deal will take effect from the point Kanto Glass factory reaches level 3. Kusaribe Zaibatsu will attempt to achieve this as soon as possible.
All profits of this company will be shared 50-50.

ECONOMIC NEWS
JAPANESE INDUSTRY SLOWING DOWN
A recent report by a trusted statistical analyzer has come to a shocking conclusion, Japanese industrial growth is slowing down!
In the previous 2 years the Japanese economies profits has experienced growth of barely 17% despite the thousands of Yen invested into it. Glass and Fabric were exceptionally hard hit with the latter's profit shrinking to 1/6th of it's previous return despite the industry over doubling in size.

Statistical Analysis:
  • Liquor remains the most profitable industry with a return of circa $92,841.40
  • Overall earnings from industry are circa $268,477.24, up from circa $229,306.47
  • Worst off was the Fabric industry, returns dropped from circa $33,558.10 in the last term to circa $5909.35
  • Profit Per Factory for Japanese has hit an 10 year low at circa $7,065.19
  • Overall Industry grew by 40% with the addition of 11 new factories
  • Luxury Clothes remains the most efficient industry despite per factory returns dropping $1051.55
  • Cement had a fantastic year with a profit increase of circa $23,000, lifting it out of its 4 year slump
  • Glass industry grew to double its size but per factory profits shrank.
  • Explosives was the worst performing industry costing the government nearly $718 in subsidies
  • Furniture and Paper both saw increases of almost 100%.
  • Profit from Liquor currently forms 34% of Japanese Industries returns.
  • Glass, Luxury Clothes and Cement have the largest returns after liquor with 21%, 20% and 16% respectively.
  • Paper, Fabric, Furniture and Lumber together form 9% of profit from industry.
  • The remaining industries (Lumber, Steel and Explosives) combined do not reach a return of $1000.
  • Glasses share of the Industry grew by 9% (an increase of 75%)
  • Cements share of the Industry grew by 7% (an increase of 78%)
  • Fabrics share of the Industry dropped by 13% (a decrease of 87%)
As Japan reaches a difficult point in its industrialization many economists are hoping the influx of resources from their new land in Korea will provide the economy with a much needed boost. If not we may see Nippon face a recession, sa bad sign for the ruling National Liberals - Kamikaze Party Alliance.

The Emperor, in accordance with the will of Amaterasu, our historical traditions and the Constitution, is the supreme authority that choses the government of Nippon, all power emanates from Him and is sanctioned by Him. Does the so-called Freedom Party wish the Japanese subjects to be free, in their choice, from the obedience to the Emperor as well? While executing their duties during national elections and voting for the political party that he sees as more corresponding to his ideals, any true man of Nippon should understand that it is the Emperor who makes the final decision on the formation of the ruling council, accepts His sacred will - and does not aspire to replace Him in this role, "сhoosing the government" himself, as the charter of Jiudo seems to suggest.

Oshiro (1876-1877): Rises and Falls.

While the first part of Oshiro Kazuki’s third tenure as Prime Minister proved to be explosive and full of conflict, the fall of Korea would finally usher in a time of peace for the island of Japan. Japan though, with its international recognition as a Great Power, needed a way to flex its muscles to show the rest of the world that the country means business. While Japan was a military power to be feared across Asia, resentment towards the Japanese for being an inferior Asiatic nation came from European powers and those in America. Perhaps the rise of Japan would allow for all nations to rise above their perceived limits and beat out any western power should the west dare to attack the Japanese nation. Yet, the Japanese needed to show that they were a power to stay, and to prove that they were now an influential part of the world.

(Propaganda painted many Europeans as bullies. Shown is the Russian Tsar picking on Japan over the islands north of Hokkaido)

The first chance the Japanese got at this was a contest. The Nile River in Africa, the longest river in the world, was still a mystery to many people even after the 4000 years humans have used its waters. Western powers were beginning to fund expeditions to discover the source of the Nile River (Which we now know is Lake Victoria). Japan, not being a nation to be left behind, ordered an expedition. It would be a military expedition managed by Prince Date Munenari. Munenari would fund an expedition by one Lieutenant Hatorri Jinto, a Lieutenant in the Japanese army. Hatorri would report back to Date Munenari about the progress of the journey into Africa. Munenari hoped that Hatorri can provide great prestige to Japan.

(Lt. Hatorri)

The second thing Japan did to boost its international standings was to invest in lesser powers’ economies. Kishiwada Yukio, the proud businessman and considered the richest man in Japan, would buy land in Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands to construct factories. The Danes would have this felt the most since Denmark had no factories in its country up to this point. Many European nations though blocked this, for many felt EUROPE should be the one building in ASIA, not the other way around. While Kishiwada was expanding the bounds of Japanese Industry abroad, he was not doing well at home. He and Hajamoto Yoshihiro were both suffering internally during the year of 1876. The fabric industry basically collapsed for a time, and both men had huge investments in the production of fabric and textiles. Perhaps this would be a grand opportunity to take control of the industrial sector from these two large corporations? One man sure played it smart, Kusaribe Kinzo. Kinzo’s clothing industry was not really rocked by the textile collapse. Kinzo just lost some money buying fabric elsewhere to fuel his clothing industry. But the reason why Kinzo had played this year smart was because he formed two joint-investors with his competitors. He formed an armament trust with Kishiwada Yukio, which would provide both sides with money from building the same factory, and he founded a glass trust with Hajamoto Yoshihiro. Hajamoto’s decline in profit may have come due to the fact that he agreed to give half his profits in his glass factory in Kyushu to Kinzo, Yoshihiro’s most profitable factory. Perhaps as the two giants of industry slumped, Kinzo can overtake both of these men and become the richest man in Japan.

Last, there was international tension. In Western Macedonia, Austria Hungary backed Greek control of the region and threatened war with the Ottoman Empire should they have refused. Turkey was in a bad spot, until the powers of Europe started joining Turkey’s side. Germany, Great Britian, and Italy would back Turkey, while France would stay neutral. Date Munenari, seeing this as a chance to gain some relationship points with Japan’s old enemies, the British and the Turks, decided to back Turkey. The crisis would end in a white peace, and Munenari was heard boasting that Japanese intervention is what caused Austria to concede. Still, it showed that Japan can tussle with the big boys of the west now.

As the election year of 1877 dawned, it was time once again to determine who would sit on the Diet. The National Liberals though were in for a tough fight. A new party, the Freedom Party, formed. Its leader, Unryu Raizo, advocated for a united opposition against the dominant National Liberal Party. Sakamoto Naotari, Satake Yoshizone, and many other individuals from the opposition rallied behind this new party, and created a new breed of opposition. This new opposition could tip the balance of power against the National-Liberals in the election, but only time could tell if these men can actually change the system. After-all, the Unity and Honor leader Uesugi Narinori was rumored to be against this new party…

((Private: Freedom Party))

Fellow Jiyudo members! As many are still flocking to join our party and should have every chance to participate in the process of leadership selection, I suggest we continue to allow new members to join while candidates put themselves forward for the primary. In that spirit, I suggest take the maximum time ((deadline Thursday 9pm EST)) to allow candidates to put themselves forward, or nominate other members, for the party leadership.

If we follow this recommendation, at ((9PM EST Thursday)) the primary election will begin, and will terminate at ((7PM EST Friday)). While this does leave some time for the creation of a platform and choosing an election strategy, given the circumstances of forming so close to an election it may perhaps be wise for all primary candidates to put forward a platform and an electoral strategy ((which regions we should run in)) during the primary. This both allows the party to select the platform in the most democratic manner possible, and ensures that when the time comes to submit to the electoral mission we will be able to do so in a timely manner.

If anyone has any concerns, questions, or alternative proposals they should of course put them forward at any time during this process. The Jiyudo does not have any unelected or interim leaders and my suggestions should take no more weight than any other man's. I also pledge to not run in this first primary election, so as to not take advantage of a hurried situation at party formation or steer this promising party into the rocks of crony politics.

Good evening and good luck to all freedom-loving Nipponese,
Admiral Unryu

Uesugi's server poured him and his guest some tea, to which Uesugi fully ignored to focus on the visitor. A tallish sort for a Japanese man, he had all the bearing of his father, if not quite the looks. Uesugi Mochinori bowed at the honour of being asked the question.

"The Unity and Honour banners were never meant to eternally float in the breeze. As the seasons change, so must we. While we will always hold the banner in our hearts, the youth of today know not of your work. I say lay these banners to rest father, and join the bigger picture."

Mochinori waited to see his father's reaction with baited breath. If his father decided his advice was unsuitable, Mochinori doubted he would hold another opinion of note until he became Marquis. However he was surprised when his father only gave a truly aristocratic grunt.

"Makes sense. Freedom may be a failed endevour anyways, which means the banner could be raised again. Your words have helped me son. I miss when I didn't have to sully my hands in base things like politics though, it stinks of peasantry."

Mochinori smiled wide, he didn't fail.

---

By Decision of Marquis Uesugi Narinori, the Unity and Honour Party is hereby subsumed within the Freedom Party.

The Party Banner shall lowered by Narinori himself on the 8th.
