playing as the UK, and randomly renaming my ships.

know, i know the UK has some outlandish navy ship names, but HMS Aphex Twin and HMS Boards of Canada never stops being funny.

hmmm...

HMS Costa del Crime?

HMS Irritable?

HMS Castle Lager?

HMS Posh and Becks?

HMS Cypress Hill?

HMS Fast Show?

HMS Discovery Channel?

When I have old ships I don't need to pay maitenence for (since they can't dent an ironclad if their life depended on it), I name them after things I don't like and send them out one by one to die.

Ok, not really, but...

You mean like having 15 leaders called "Aragos" ?
Must be a strange feeling reading that leader Aragos dies..after some time: leader Aragos dies...leader Aragos dies...

But germans sunk lots of british ships during WW1..what was so special about this one??
That it was American (USA was neutral at the time) and carried lots of civilians.

It's one thing to sink ships belonging to a nation you're at war with, a bit worse if the ship is neutral, especially if it wasn't transporting goods/material to the nation you're at war with.

I like to follow the basic outline of European royalty--how many more Swedish guys are named Gustav? Or English women named Elizabeth?

BTW--I usually just name one after myself :)

Titanic had two sister ships, Britannic and another one (the name eludes me for the moment, something similar...), I think Britannic was sunk by a german sub somewhere in the greek archipelago, maybe that's the one you're thinking of? (Fortunately the ship was on it's way to pick up wounded soldiers and was far from full, the deaths resulted mostly from a life boat being sucked into the propellers. Had it been going in the other direction the disaster would have been worse than the Titanic.
The third ship also sunk some time after the war IIRC, proving Murphy's law beyond any shadow of a doubt.
Interestingly, one person was on board all three ships when they went down and survived all three times.)

Personally, I name my ships by class and number (ex: BB-1, for the first battleship, BB-23 for the twentythird).

I beleive that the Lusitania was registered as british, but was carrying many americans which led to the outrage here. And it was carrying arms. The british had a deal with J.P. Morgan that let them borrow money and buy U.S. arms. The british would then sneak it back to the U.K. by putting some on passenger ships. I think the british would also fly the flag of a neutral country (the U.S.) while near the home islands in order to avoid u-boats...

Where the ship was registered or what it was carrying are irrevelant. The only thing that matters is that it was flying neutral colors (if I remember correctly).
