Realism is good but as in every game a compromise has to be made between playability and realism.
Players will exploit the rules - the AI will not. Players will only take the provinces they need to force a peace / puppet / annex. AI tends to be less single minded.
Players will tailor research to reach specific ahistorical goals. AI tends to adopt a broad front approach to research.
I would be suprised if any competent player could not win as any one of the three main groupings after two or three games on normal. After all it is relatively easy for expert players to achieve world domination (or in Ebbesen's case world conquest) with small minor countries in EU2.
The point is - can you have fun with HoI. And the answer to that is a big YES! Play around with the scenario editor, change OOB's and leaders, change allliance groupings. The possibilities are immense.
And remember, HoI is a fun game as was EU. But there are a whole load of cool ideas (and probably many more to come from retail players) which never made it in to HoI and hopefully will make it in to HoI 2 if it ever happens. And of course there will be player mod AI upgrades a la EU2 - because however many betas there are there will be 100x more players and hence 100x more experience and hard work in improving elements of the game. The beauty of the EU series and HoI is that the game evolves as the player base grows. So - rather than complaining that US is too easy, why not start working out how you can handicap the US for an enjoyable game. Then tell us all!
