I'm playing through another game of HOI3, for fun, and I noticed a problem which I hope is avoided in HOI4.

As Italy, I stayed out of the Axis but I still wanted an empire. So in 1939, a week after Germany invaded Poland, I declared war on Yugoslavia and Romania jumped in to defend them. Knowing that Greece, Hungary and Bulgaria might join a faction before I finished the war I also declared war on them.

So it was Italy against Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, and Romania. Now it wasn't my best game so my units weren't a well prepared as they could have been and really the 5 countries together should have defeated me....except they didn't act together. I could just pick one off at a time with the rest waiting until I got to their borders.
This is a problem.

So in HOI4 will there be some system whereby unaligned co-defenders (especially those who share a border), such as this example, can work together? I somehow doubt it.

My solutions:
1) a coordination event that fires allowing the unaligned neighbours to work together. ie. Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Hungary's troops could have moved into Yugoslavia onto the front lines to fight me. OR
2) a temporary faction event that fires causing the co-defenders to opt into the joining of a faction that lasts as long as the war lasts.

Both options have their merits, but most of all I want to make sure the missing unaligned co-defending mechanic that was missing in HOI3 is somehow incorporated into HOI4.

The problem would be unaligned and unallied countries who are neighbours who would, in reality, allied after war was declared on them to coordinate.

So that would sadly not help :/

The problem is solved partially where the attacker in in a faction ie. Germany, because then the attacked country ie. Greece automatically joins the allies. But when the attacker and defenders are all non aligned there is a flaw.

I think that the problem with HOI3 was that the faction system was too rigid while forming an alliance outside of a faction was close to impossible. However in HOI4 we know that we can form factions and alliances so I would assume that these countries would form a makeshift faction. However I don't know if the AI can make factions/alliances by itself.

This is also about forming a faction or alliance after a war starts. If Italy attacks Hungary and Yugoslavia in 1939, even if they are not allies or in a faction before the war, they should be able to work together/ally/form a faction to defend against Italy after they are attacked.

Ie. something where a country is more likely to accept an alliance or faction invite if they are at war with the same country another country is at war with.

There are ways to do it, as long as something is done.
