Unable to start EU4

Hello all,

First time poster, long time lurker. I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with starting EUIV through steam. When I start it, it acts like it's going to bring up the launcher but then nothing happens. I've tried restarting my computer, reinstalling EUIV, even tried running the launcher directly from the Steam directory and it loaded but it had no color or shaders as far as I could tell. I have opened up the .wer file from the app crashes when I try to launch it manually. Any help would be greatly appreciated because this has been working for a long time and I can't think of why it would suddenly be failing. Before anyone asks

I've also done all the steps listed in other threads such as reinstalling, verifying the steam cache, installing relevant microsoft modules, and now i'm uploading my DXDIAG, settings.txt, and system.log. It's worth noting that the Documents>Paradox>EUIV folder did not get recreated on reinstallation so I'm using a restored version

Hey New info! I got it to work by reverting to 1.27. This is a real bummer as the Manchu update was why I was trying to play in the first place. But it tells me it's related to the version rather than the PC

It's worth noting that the Documents>Paradox>EUIV folder did not get recreated on reinstallation

That points to an antivirus app getting in the way, it does not recognise the new eu4,exe

Add EU4.exe AND Paradox Launcher.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

@AndrewT I'm not running any AV software that I know of. So I don't think that's the cause. I have been having unknown Blue Screen errors but not related to EU4 or seemingly any other specific application. It's happening randomly seemlingly independant of what I am doing. It BSOD one time while it was idle while I was at work. I'm totally willing to concede that this may be an issue specific to my computer. But all I get from the BSOD errors is that it's a memory error, so not a lot to go off of.

EDIT: Also I did find how to add the launcher and the eu4.exe and it still is not working. So even with the firewall off and exclusions added it's not launching.

You are almost certainly running at least Windows Defender.

Firewalls have nothing to do with it, only antivirus functionality causes these problems.

In the taskbar search box enter Ransomeware . When it comes up, if it's disabled then enable it. Go into Controlled Folder Access and add EU4.exe AND Paradox Launcher.exe to the Apps Allowed Through list there. You can disable it again after doing that if you wish.

Ok I've done that with no change in result. It was turned off when I got there but I turned it on and added EU4 to the exceptions list. I'm having a hard time finding the paradox launcher.exe I'm checking in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Paradox Interactive\ but I don't see an executable there. Nor is it in the Documents location. It's very strange I could swear I saw it under the APPDATA location before...

Exit the Steam application entirely, then run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user, and run the game from the PLAY button there. Any better?

Cannot run game. No mods, no changes to any files. I click on play in the launcher and I get an immediate CTD. Where can I find the files to send them to you for diagnostics?
