Unable to start CK2

I am unable to load CK2 past the launcher. Once I click the launcher, the Paradox logo comes up full screen and I can hear game music briefly before the game crashes. I have tried uninstalling CK2 and deleting the documents folder but it doesn't seem to help. I have previously been able to run CK2 on my machine (as recently as the end of July) but am unable to load it now. I tried running the VC Redistributable files mentioned in other posts but they claim that the necessary software is already installed and I was only able to tell it to repair the install with no luck. I also tried running the DirectX file linked in other posts but am still unable to load the game.

I have attached a pastebin of the "system" log file as it is the only log file with any information in it that I can find. Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Edit: I have the steam version of the game and I am playing it in Windows 8 if that matters.

Try deleting the Documents CK2 settings.txt file and le the game recreate it with default settings. If that doesn't help Try a full clean reinstall: move any valued save games elsewhere and uninstall the game from within Steam. Then manually delete ALL the CK2 directories from under BOTH the Steam and MyDocuments folders. Now reinstall the game from Steam, and run the Verify just to make sure it all came down properly.
