I bought the game via Humble Bundle, when I try to sign into Google+ it says "Failed to sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." When I have perfectly fine internet.

Did you ever find a fix? I am still having this issue. It won't let me buy the expansion either, it says the payment processor is unavailable? I took screenshots of the errors, but they don't seem to want to attach from my phone so I have put them up using tinypic
Some of the Dev forums I found that discuss google play services login failures seem to indicate that most likely the signature in the humble bundle apk is not correctly signed to match with the one registered with google play.

I've logged a bug report on this, all we can do is wait for a patch to fix it.
Also, I understand that with the HB version you need to manually get updates from them. So check you are on 2.30, if not get that update from them.
