I started out as Count of Napoli, swore fealty to the Byzantine Emperor and after ~100 years I was the most powerful Doux of the Byzantine Empire and the plan was to become emperor and paint the whole map purple.

Now I've inherited the Kingdom of Scotland from my mother and became independent at the same time. However, I don't want to be independent because my core holdings are in southern italy and greece, all my allies are vassals of the BE and I am afraid the BE or the muslims are going to steamroll me eventually.

So I want to swear fealty to the BE again but I don't have the option in the menu. Is this a bug or intentional?

You are a King ruled by nobody but god!
Well that's how the game treats it so no I'm afraid that's the way its designed.
Can't think of any way around it as i don't think you can destroy or give away your primary title... Only way is to keep your capital in the BE and wait for the inevitable rebellion in Scotland due to distance/poor relations and hope its one to put a pretender on the throne. Lose the war and you would then become a duke and could swear fealty to the BE before using your strong claim to go back after the crown of Scotland.

If you are a King then your kingdom needs to be de jure part of the Empire to which you are trying to swear fealty. As a Duke or below you can swear fealty to any King or Emperor.

What if you switch to Sicily as your primary title (click the banner, then "make primary"), you should now be able to rejoin the empire. I think it should be possible to swear fealty if your primary title is part of the empire.

I feel for you. I had a game ruined under similar circumstances. My 'core' lands were quickly gobbled up by the ERE and I was stuck in far away territory I didn't really care about to begin with. Lesson learned: don't take foreign king titles.

true but my mother was just a princess when my father married her and she was nr 5+ in succession so it was really 'bad' luck she became queen at all.

but it went well for me. I could marry a daugther to the byzantine emperor (she died with 19, 30 years ago but I still haven't had any DoWs from outside my realm) and got a stable grip on scotland now, quadrupled my army and starting to expand into ireland.

thx for the info with switching to sicily. I've created the kingdom of sicily but I will not switch to it as primary title until I can change the succession in sicily to primogeniture.
