I recently began my first game as the UK. Couldn't face the hassle of all the fronts before. I'm plaing on ve/f, cause i need alot of IC i reckon...and i ihave more resources then most, so why not? Using the Industrial Specialist., and administrative genius, and so boosted my IC to about 460...yea.

Got about 60 inf and 10 marine, with 10 mot+arm. loads of interceptors in UK, and bombers+torpedo planes in the med and africa. A massive navy to be envied by everyone except well, the US as usual.

So its sept 40, and i've basically completely destroyed the Italians in Africa, and the French have strangely seiazed much of their african provinces. The Italian navy is now 8 subs and a crappy battleship. Dunno how that happened to be honest...but my 40 ships destroyed their 90...which is pretty weird. Never really played a full-on naval power before, so covering convoys and attempting to draw them into a massive naval battle for me to trash them is quite fun.

So i've decided to go for the 'soft underbelly' of fortress Europe...italy. and maybe vichy. So just wondering how other ppl did things. Is invading mainland Europe a good idea in 1940?

You just go and invade Italy. Germany doesn't know how to help so you can go right up to Venezia. Remember though, if you get a direct frontline with Germany and they are not yet at war with the Russians, you're in trouble.

Also, taking Italy shouldn't be that hard on ve... ;) :p

At 460, your industry shouldn't be too far behind Germany after its historical expansion. Germany would probably have had a head start technologically, but with 60-70 divisions at your disposal and more on the way, I seriously doubt that Jerry could deny you Italy. If you wanted to play it safe, stop at the bottleneck province just north of Rome and transfer your forces to an invasion of France. With your human smarts, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could make a serious dent in the German holdings in France; and with complete naval dominace and a lot of BB's and TP's, you could land anywhere from Marseilles to Bordeaux to Aarhus/Aalborg (I can never remember which one it is; Danes, I apologize, I try).

Now, with less than 100 divisions, I doubt you could throw Germany back across the Rhine without a prolonged struggle, but hey, you do what you can do. Just position yourself as best you can, because once the Soviets enter the fray, you'll be hard-pressed to reach Berlin before they do (though you could always launch another amphibious invasion aimed at the Danzig area, and cut to the Carpathians to cut off the Soviet advance.

Remember to leave about 10 divisions and a decent anti-naval force in India and Malaysia so the Japanese don't get too far. Once the Soviets enter the war, the Japanese will be doomed anyway (you'd make short work of them once the Germans are out), but they could still do a fair amount of damage to you if you aren't careful. Protect the integrity of the Empire!

You are very well off with your England ;) I'd keep on making multiple beacheads, dont get tunnel vision either.

My 1 game as Britain in 1.06 I failed to hold France because of just the numbers the Krauts produced then with my Dunkirk in Brest, got away. I spent the 40-44 making men and helping out China, Australia and Africa, best part IMO. Then the US made a massive landing in Marsielles and I came to support them, with the help of the US (and CORE) I was able to take France and move on to Germany, beating the Russains to Berlin by a hair. Britain is best played on slow time, real fun games can be had.

Remember air support for your invasion. Germany usually has lots of tac/dive bombers at her disposal. They can really hurt you before you establish a strong beach head.

Which is why i'm invading sicily lol. The Italians have like 7 squadrons...against my 9 or so. Their mostly naval bombers tho, so they won't do a good job of intercepting my hurricanes lol.

And i've managed to protect Norway...wow. Me and them have held the jerries off for a year now.

Go for Italy, but don't get a common border with Germany. Stop short or that then build up for a Balkan campaign. Take out any nation there that joins the Axis. Annex them. Beat the Soviets to that territory and you will have a base to cut the Germans when they go to war with the Soviets. Get your mechanized and armor to push for Berlin and Konigsberg. Come up from Italy as you complete this task. Do an invasion of Bremen when the Jerries leave to recapture Berlin. Keep the front fluid and in constant motion. Liberate Denmark and your ships can help in the Baltic. Prepare for Japan's DOW. Move fleet to the Pacific/Indian Ocean when it becomes idle in the Atlantic/Med. Use Marines for multiple raids. When they are threatened in force, withdraw them to the transports and repeat elsewhere. Your fleet will win the war against Japan.
