Cliche is good. There's a reason why "friend" and "space party" caught on but a dozen pages of densely-written backstory wouldn't.

I agree. However, I'll probably tweak that first paragraph I don't think it reads very well. I'm going to write the backstory out longform at some point as there's a lot of ideas i had that i didn't really touch upon.

I made some changes to the spreadsheet logic so it should pick stuff up automatically now. If this is unwelcome then I can revert it.

Faction Name: Alcarian Empire (might change to something to do with the sun of the home system)
Phenotype(Species): Mammalian/Human
Ethos: Spiritualist, Collectivist, Militarist (might drop Militarist for Fanatical Spiritualist)
Traits: Intelligent (2), Enduring (1), Slow Breeders (-1)
Government: Divine Mandate, Military Dictatorship or Despotic Empire; unsure of which I would prefer. My ideal government type would be a combination between Divine Mandate and Despotic Empire.
Start FTL: Warp
Start Weapons: Energy
Starting Planet: Alcar Prime (Continental)

Species/Faction Bio:

The Alcarians are a subset of Humans who left the planet in the mid-21st century following a man who believed that technology and spirituality could, and should, work hand-in-hand to further the human species. They have no direct worship structure, but do have several "deities" that are important, most of which based on viewable or tangible concepts or objects. The sun, Solus, of the home system of the Alcarian Imperium, for instance, is commonly referred to as if it was a living entity. The universe itself, Everys, is also referred to similarly, though more in an abstract sense of all life being connected through unseen bonds. The people of the Alcarian Empire left Earth in 13 colony ships that were well equipped. Two ships were lost during the journey to their new home; one was lost to seemingly inexplicable reasons, while the other was lost to a hull breach caused by stellar debris and dust. As a result, many took the number 11 to be a inportant number, both culturally and spiritually. After arriving at the planet they would name Alcar, after their leader Alcarius, they began to quickly construct homes, workplaces and entertainment areas.

The Alcarians began researching, and learning, about more advanced technologies while encouraging their citizens to explore the more spiritual aspects of their existence. When FTL drive sciences and technologies were finally developed, Alcarius II ordered the construction of ships to expand their territories and understanding of the universe. Most Alcarians have no objection to slavery, so long as the slaves are treated with dignity and respect. Most of the sentient denizens of Alcar Prime also wholeheartedly believe in the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, or one.

Species/Faction Bio:
The Calvarians remember the age of strife, when nations, faiths and ideologies drew them to war among themselves. That age is far gone. From the ashes of countries and religions, the cooperations rose to completely dominate politics and now wars are fought on stockmarkets and in boardrooms, with mergers and takeovers as their weapons. The calvarian people now toil in the machinery of the market, as the Corporate Council keeps an watchful eye.

Wow it's definitely going to be a materialist galaxy. So far on the spreadsheet Materialist is the most followed ethos with 4 fanatics and 3 non-fanatics, ahead of Militarist (1 fanatic and 5 non-fanatics).

We shall see how long their filthy money will keep them away from the true path that is following in the steps of The Being. None will blaspheme against Influencer of our evolution. They will join under us either willingly by abandoning their false believes, or we will show them the truth path by force.

While the Being is a sect which has not properly recognised what an awesome guy Bob is, we agree with them. Perhaps we spiritual powers must stick together. Bob's pretty keen on it.

Leader: Archprophet Kair
Starting FTL: Wormhole
Starting Weapons: Mass Drivers
Starting Planet: Ur'khan (Desert)

Species/Faction Bio:
And lo, the Great Ur-Mother brought low the very heavenly bodies themselves and so the Star Eggs came into being, the eggs of the Taros, Children of Ur, the Planet who was a Goddess. So says our great Holy Book, the Ur'khanhal, passed down and ever strengthened by the Archprophets since time immemorial...

We are a people possessed of a single purpose which is above all else... to serve the Goddess. Long ago, after the great calamity the needs of the individual were given way to the needs of the way and the life of serving. Those who need to serve will serve, just as all serve the Goddess... the greatest of all positions is that of slave, for what is life but slavery to the Goddess? The word Slave once held an evil meaning long ago, before the calamity, but now it is a word of praise! A slave is the freest of all, one who has admitted what he is in the way of life and serves to his fullest abilities.

Thus is how life is, we serve, we die... all are Slaves, yet to be a Slave is to know the Goddess...

We have long looked up at the Stars with wonder and yearning, yet we never forget who gave us life in the first place... the Ur-Mother, our Planet, Home and Goddess. All Taro would die to protect the Ur-Mother, the Goddess-Planet, greatest among all the Stars. She birthed us, pulling us from the very star stuff of the void and working us into forms which pleased her. Now we go out into the Stars once more, and we will bring the teachings of the Goddes-Planet and the Archprophet with us.

We were not always so enlightened however... this age of greatness came only through the harsh lessons of a darker time...

We were unruly children long ago, and for many untold years we rebelled against our Ur-Mother, we toiled away for individual and materialist gains. We put the needs of a few above service to the greater good of all and the Goddess. Our Archprophets were but one actor on the world stage, nations, corporations, heathen beliefs... they all vied for dominance and power over the Ur-Mother, soiling her natural beauty and making war across her form.

This all changed on the Day of Fire... the Ur-Mother in one fell swoop was cleansed of the vermin which infested her body! The hubris of the non-believers brought about Armageddon, and through the ash, smoke and flames the true believers remained! We had seen the signs, the Archprophet ahd prepared us... we dug down deep into our loving Mother's Embrace and there we hid until the flames were all but extinguished... We rose back up once more, and the Ur-Mother was cleansed of the filth of the past!

The cities full of heathens were but dust, glistening, beautiful sand dunes spread out in all directions... At first we were lost, but the Archprophet soon led us forward again, and we spread and retook our Ur-Mother's form. We enslaved the pockets of non-believers which had survived, teaching them the true love of the Goddess-Planet in their service until it was worn into their children and their children's children.

Soon, all of our Mother's form was our's, the old ways were abolished and a new civilization arose among the sand and oasis. We came to adapt to our new world, taking in the gifts of our Mother and changing to better suit her new ways. Now, with our society finally built the right way... we have surpassed our old boundaries, the Stars we had long stared up at are no longer a limit... but an invitation...

Our people are now totally loyal to the way of the Ur-Mother, her word spreading all across her wondrous form during the rebuilding of our civilization. From settlement to settlement the word spread like wildfire... we all knew we had failed her, and we would not fail again...

Now we go out into the Stars from which we were born, we will spread the Ur-Mother's Spirit to all the worlds of the Void, through whatever means necessary. We will teach the ways of Slavery and servitude to those we find, for it is the fastest way to loving the Goddess and nearing her... death as a Slave is celebrated, a life of service and worship which cannot be attained by the free. Only once all worlds are bright with her energy and covered in the toiling masses of her worshipers will we know we have done right...

We fear not the labors and struggles of the void for we serve the Goddess... We fear not the alien for we serve the Goddess... We fear not death, for we serve the Goddess...

Start FTL: Warp
Start Weapons: Mass Drivers
Starting Planet: Clasna (Arctic)
Species/Faction Bio: "It is the responsibility of the strong to uphold the rights of the weak." - a quotation from an old religious text, but it still influences how the Crysik act as a whole today. From the icy wastes of Clasna, the species has always had to be inventive and extremely capable to survive in the inhospitable circumstances. Although their larval and pupal stages last far longer than every other arthropoid on the planet, this time is used for metamorphosing useful traits for the individual's future plans, allowing the race's members to each be productive in many different fields and environments, which bodes well for colonial efforts outside of the homeworld. The natives of Clasna are also fiercely independent, due to their long development time allowing for a more developed adult, meaning that outside support is rarely needed for these capable and adaptive individuals. This does however mean that Crysik communities tend to remain small, but under a united planet, they are ready to explore the cosmos.

Basically a species that has a couple cat jokes (but I can swap those out for something else) who have suffered through the strife of religious conflict; now believe in the holiness of heat, fire and stars, and are allowed to worship freely (but only as long as they properly worship the right things(stars)) and place more importance on social harmony and conflict resolution(The eternal holy places must be protected from the conflicts and mistakes of mortals).

Although there are many differences between our factions at the RP level (which I am still working on) and in Government form, they share some strong similarities. I hope it doesn't look like I stole from you, I only just managed to read through everyone's posts after posting my own Faction! :p

At first I was afraid I ought to change my faction so it isn't so similar, but I think RP wise it should be different enough to remain interesting (unless other folks think I should still change it). A thought did come to me however... perhaps our species could both come from some lost precursor? Seeded throughout the galaxy, perhaps as long lost colonists which have now diverged but share some long lost ancient connection?

If you are interested in something along those lines I would be up for it (although the in game species backstory might contradict it later, since I guess those can pop up after a while...)

Oh man, I skimmed through the thread and thought no one was going fanatic spiritualist so I decided to do it and then 5 min later I looked back through and counted 4/5 fanatic spiritualists. You know what this means.... HOLY WAR..... or because all of us seem to have grabbed collectivist naturally we must combine to form a federation FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF THE MANY.

Although your ways may be heathen, you are not nearly so bad as those who stand to strip the universe of the glory of the greater divine... let those who see beyond the veil of the material join our might together so we might crush those who would drive us into an age of debauchery!

The plot thickens, and the spaces quell.

THERE IS ONLY ONE REMAINING.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

Yes, well, that's enough use of the caps key. Interesting new chaps on the block, and I think that's our first Fanatic Individualist, no less. I'm liking the Crysik.
There's another Fanatic Individualist in the Children of Enki from Marklar, but this still looks to be a Collectivist galaxy on the whole. I did a brief graph to show how the galaxy is shaping up, it will be fun to see the conflicts between religion and science, and war and peace.

We need to get the rest of the empires onto the spreadsheet. There's some interesting distributions shaping up; it turns out that people really, really like Intelligent and Enduring.

I wouldn't worry too much. Me and Bay got almost similar starting ideas and even similar goaks and future development ideas. It's always nice to ask how they would handle a situation (or would have handled).
