So after a couple hundred hours and way too many late nights, I think I've manage to crystallize my two biggest UI frustrations and how I'd like to see them addressed. Namely, it's fleet information and management, and finding or colonizing habitable worlds. I think these could best be addressed by the addition of a Military/Fleet and Worlds tab to the ship designer and Empire panels respectively.

First the military tab. It's very annoying to build several ships in a distributed fashion, or to see your fleet compositions in a mixed fleet (doom stack). I'd prefer if the ship designer panel defaulted to a military/fleet tab. Which lists all your constructed ship types sorted by class and displaying some of the info available on tooltips.
Also include repair and upgrade buttons to separate all units of that type from their current fleet and issue the repair/upgrade commands to all of that type.

For example:
Battleships____________________________________________________________________________
  • Design1-Class | number in use | Current HP (Max HP) | DPS | Upkeep cost [repair] [upgrade]
  • Design2-Class | number in use | Current HP (Max HP) | DPS | Upkeep cost [repair] [upgrade]
  • Design3-Class | number in use | Current HP (Max HP) | DPS | Upkeep cost [repair] [upgrade]
Cruisers______________________________________________________________________________
  • Design1-Class | number in use | Current HP (Max HP) | DPS | Upkeep cost [repair] [upgrade]
and so down the line...

On the ship designer itself it would be nice to have a build button down in the save button area. Hitting this would take you a galaxy map view of your empire with the only overlay info being displayed is systems with spaceports capable of building the design and add/subtract toggles similar to setting sector systems. Each spaceport should display what's currently in their build queue, preferably with the 1-4 diamonds denoting size.

Now colonization...

I think there should be a tab under empire (or contacts, I'm not that picky ;)) to keep track of information about all known habitable worlds. I'd like the habitable worlds tab to have toggles at the top for planet type display and checkboxes to show planets in your borders, in unclaimed/unknown space, and in other empires borders, and whether to ignore pre-sentient or pre-neolithic pops. Have columns to sort by system name (default), size, and distance. Distance would either be from your capital or have a dropdown on the panel somewhere of your colonized worlds to select. Each entry should also have a colonize button like if it's surveyed and reachable.

As far as building those colony ships...That could be done very well on the Species tab. When displaying species within your empire, clicking on the species could expand it like sectors do with planets to show the ethics of population members and their happiness (minus any planet specific modifiers). If there are any living on a world with a spaceport, have a button to construct a colony ship with that pop by either automatically picking the first available spaceport with the lowest queue, or using the ship building system I outlined above.

There ya have it. Please feel free to rip my ideas to shreds or tell me how/why your ideas are better at your leisure :). Also apologies in advance to any authors that wrote nearly identical threads that I wasn't reading because I was playing Stellaris and pondering these ideas.

I checked over this again to see if anything would conflict with the changes for Asimov we saw in today's stream and I think the only change necessary is that the planet information should replace the admittedly clunky distance metric with the influence cost to colonize. I also noticed a shortcoming with the repair/upgrade options to the fleet management list, clicking these should also queue a merge command back to the ships individual fleets. Would still like to read any feedback anyone might have about required information that may be missing though. I may mock up some screenshots this weekend as well to clarify the layout.

a few ideas to contribute

for the military tab, perhaps information for the various platforms/stations/fortresses and transport/armies would be interesting to have in there too.

- total naval capacity for ship class
- Specials for battleship and platforms classes (according to design)
- Army type and health/upkeep for transports.
- a disband button.

a button to shift from a pure design breakdown to a designs per fleet breakdown (similar to the galaxy/empire button in the species tab) would be nice.

the fleet focus would show fleet specific information in a header (similar to sector summary) and then a breakdown by designs in that fleet
- leader,
- ship types numbers,
- naval capacity used by this fleet
- upgrade and repair buttons,
- global fleet upkeep with a tooltip showing applied modifiers (from admiral/orbit, shipyard bonus would be interesting too though difficult to show) .

Stations could be grouped by system they're built in.

for the colonization/ system overview tab I started with the idea of having a planet list and evolved into a general purpose system overview with would allow to overview survey and resource stations building as well, here is my initial design:

Button to select planet or system focus.
Filters for Planets Inside borders | unclaimed space | all | colonizable

The System focus would display a header with system information (sector like) with planets/bodies of interest nested under it (like the planets in sector view)
System sun image click to fold/unfold system header | right click to survey/build outpost/research stations/mining stations/observation post with a matching ship selected
System name (grey if not surveyed) click to rename system
location: core systems / sector / distance | other empire space name
# colonisable planets (total size for all of them)
hostile fleet/stations (strength ?) presence indicator (same as in galaxy map)
Resources spots raw/mined (same as in galaxy map)
# Anomalies (click to prompt select science ship dialogue and queue action to selected ship)
# Research Projects (click to prompt select science ship dialogue and queue action to selected ship)

Planet/Body of interest info
Planet type image click to go to planet | right-click survey | build station (mining/research/observation/terraform with selected ship, queue action)
Planet name (grey if not surveyed) click to rename planet
Type (can colonize ? influence cost)
Flags: is under colonization | is_terraforming
Habitability (with best race tooltips, from planet view summary tab)
Planetary Modifiers
Total Size (also display size with currently unclearable blockers)
Build colony ship button => selecting from empire race on planet with spaceports
Colonize button => select colony ship dialog
Terraform button (if terraform station present) => terraform dialog
Resources (as in planet view summary) / # resourceless tiles
has Natives (and their tech level)

Sort would be by
Name system | planet
Distance sector / core / number for system | habitability for planet
# colonisable planets total size for system | size for planet
Resources for system and planet
Research (anomalies/projects) for system and planet/bodies (research resource)
