HIP is a mod that's stands to its name - it indeed adds great deal of historical immersion to the CK2 gameplay, and I cant even imagine playing vanilla game at this point.
Tho there are still potential ways to improve in that direction.
The most obvious for me is political arena of eastern Russia - Urals region, where ugric tribes are settled. In our timeline overwhelming Slavic population colonized the region exactly in the period of CK2 timeline - it basically was earliest version of Siberian frontier.
But in my 1000 hours in both Vanilla and HIP I've never seen it happening ever. Even tho those tribes are absolutely broke and have like 1 tribal holdings, they still manage to overrun feudal warlords.
What I suggest is that: create new casus belli or event chain that allows Russian warlords to colonize the region. Maybe in a way how Reconquista works in Spain.
The reward for winning a war could be culture conversion or foundation of additional settlement in the province for free, something like this.
I think this could greatly increase historical accuracy
