The one thing that I have the biggest problem with in all Paradox games, especially Victoria, is the ugly and uneven borders. I just wish there was some way that this problem could be fixed. But I do realize that this is not a significant problem in the grand scheme of things.

In order to make the map much more moddable (compared to the earlier Europa engine games), it's stored in a BMP file (so you don't need a specific application to change it), which is then scaled and projected. Unfortunately, even though it was improved with time, we're still going to see remnants of the pixels (mainly a lot of right angles).
I'm surprised, that you mention Victoria as having 'ugly and uneven' borders, since, being an Europa game, it didn't (as far as I know) have a scaled/projected map.

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I'm not talking about the divisions among the provinces themselves. I'm talking about the borders between countries. For example, France having scattered unconnected territories across Germany. It just looks really bad and for me, makes the game less fun because it seems to ahistorical.

I only had that problem in Vicky 1.0, never in 1.4 or Ricky.

In general Vicky gave much better borders than EU3

scaled/Projected BMP

Couldn't the whole scale of the BMPs be increased to cut down on jaggies?

The EU3 map is 1872x720 BMP.. 70% of which is Ocean... what if you double or even triple that? The accuracy and smoothness would naturally increase.

Someone (I believe it was OHgamer) posted about this a while ago. The problem is that, with the 3d graphical engine, that wouldn't be feasible, as it would require too much processing power.

You are right, but usually disconnected territories were the result of inheritance, not military victory.

It's too bad PI doesn't get with the times and go with a vector-based map. In theory, it'd be just about as editable (for a dedicated modder), and have the advantage of "infinite" definition of the lines.

I think that would easily eat processing power.

Especially with all the fuzz about HoI3 being slow (and single-threaded), I don't think that is a very good idea. Since many Paradox game fans, don't have the newest über newest power desktop, and just imagine the uproar if Vicky2 would be even slower than HoI3 on a average pc.
Secondly, I think it would be a bit more time consuming - since vector graphics is a bit more complicated than pixelbased - and also because Paradox has invested time and money in pixelbased maps (and learning how to make them) and can reuse these maps.

But if/when the Clausewitz engine gets proper threaded (and when average processing power increases) - then I'd love it, obviously :)

And lastly: I have yet to find vector graphics in games, and on web (anything but flags and other graphics on wikipedia).

Often they were the result of both in tandem, to be honest.

Not in the 19th century. Military planners often dictated armistice and peace terms and they wanted defensible frontiers. Alsace-Lorraine being one example of an annexation that was demanded for military reasons primarily. Other examples are the borders established at Versailles - military and economic necessity trumped history or ethnicity every time.

The DDs mentioned that the war aims system will be designed in such a way that the AI will be more likely to demand continguous (="nice") territories as spoils of war. It remains to be seen how well this will work.

I think that what the Thread is trying to say is that There should be no random taking of inland provinces by other nations.

Say I'm Argentina, and Brazil DOWs me. I win the war and I want the whole amazon river.. AND scattered provinces.

Makes no sense. I'd rather expand Above uruguay and settle myself around making NICE borders :p... Not taking just random provinces in Brazil due to their value.

Or France owning land in siberia... Milan Colonizing Archangelsk... Japan owning the Falklands... You get the point.

Cheers;
Niker

Only being able to take entire states would solve this nicely.

It would make no sense to have that, though. I prefer the AI getting disconnected territories, than, say, having to conquer the whole of Lorraine even if I want just the Moselle as Germany.
