Ubuntu 12.04 - Game not starting

On starting the game, I recieve a dialogue box with a code I need to enter once the game has begun. I click on the 'Play' button where my screen turns black as if the game is about to load. However, the game then just stops running and shuts down, not leaving any info in logs or in konsole (that I have been able to find). It is not even just running in the background trying to load, it just completely shuts down.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The most common problem of this nature in Linux is that you are using the open source video drivers. You need to use the latest proprietary drivers for your video card.

Sorry for the late reply, but I'm using Intel Integrated Graphics instead of a dedicated card, so I believe that there are only open source drivers available. Is there a fix for this or do I just need a graphics card?

1. you could try updating your kernel and graphical drivers like this:

You could upgrade your kernel (and thus, Intel drivers that are part of the kernel) by using the LTS Enablement Stack. For example this command will install the kernel and other behind-the-scenes stuff used by Ubuntu 13.10 (kernel version 3.11):

sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-saucy xserver-xorg-lts-saucy libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-saucy

It's less disruptive than a full upgrade - it doesn't touch any of your userland apps or settings, and your installation is still considered "Long Term Support". The wiki link provides extra disclaimers (e.g. you may run into problems if you use this command and later decide to upgrade the system to another non-LTS version) that you may want to read. Anyway, it's up to you whether you want to try this or wait until April for 14.04 LTS.

2. you could try running the game though a debugger (gdb) to provide information on what causes the crash. To do this, open a terminal window and enter this:

cd "~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Europa Universalis IV/"
gdb eu4 -ex run

(change the path in the first line to where the game was installed if you're not using the default)
When the game crashes, copy and paste the terminal output here.

That's strange, the game appears to crash before the debugger can catch what's happening. What is the output of:

Nothing obviously wrong there. Well, I suspect it is either a graphics card or graphics drivers issue. I suggest you try updating the drivers using the instructions in my first post.

I did what you reccomended in your previous post but now i just get this error message whenevr I tyr to run steam or any games :

You are missing the following 32-bit libraries, and Steam may not run:
libGL.so.1

The only way I can find to fix this is to install open source drivers, so I'm not really sure what to do

Try installing the 32-bit libgl libraries:

sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx-saucy:i386

If that doesn't work, try launching Steam from the terminal like this:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH steam

I tried your second option first, before downloading the 32 bit libgl packages and then repeting the process. Both times I got this error message:

Did you install the correct package? I initially wrote "libgl1-mesa-glx:i386" there, but you need to install "libgl1-mesa-glx-saucy:i386" to match the new kernel version.

I downloaded libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-saucy:i386 as that was the package that has the closest match to what you said previously according to muon package manager.

Hm. Perhaps these was installed as dependencies earlier, but just in case make sure you have installed libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-dri:i386. And don't forget to reboot afterwards.
