Is this going to be a thing? Is there any way to implement this? They were very important for German surface raiders and U-Boats early in the war. It would be cool to have them in game to support the shipping war. Thoughts on how this could be possible? And if not, how do submarines operate? I hope they don't just patrol indefinitely until they're hurt or you recall them.

Based on what I have seen and on Hoi3 I would say this will most likely be abstracted and ships will be able to stay indefinitely at sea provided they are in range of their home base and they are not sunk.

Personally I would love to see a limit in the time ships can stay at sea without going back to port to resupply, with some doctrines increasing the time they can stay at sea.

While (as long is it worked reasonably with the UI, and wasn't a micro nightmare) I'd love it if this was a thing, I doubt it will be practical to include things like this in the game, because if it's anything like HoI1, 2 or 3, ships can stay out at sea indefinitely anyway, only returning when they need repair (they've even been upgraded to the latest AA and the like at sea in past HoIs - Naval Underway Refitting FTW! - and I can see why this is, as having to return each flotilla (and now individual ship) back to port to get radar or new AA would be fiddly).

From what we know of the mechanics so far, we could potentially shorten the ranges of u-boats, and then (if it was possible) mod in a unit that acted as a floating source of supply, which then extended u-boat ranges, but I'm not sure whether the range shenanigans required to make this feasible wouldn't mess up other elements of submarine warfare, and same for a similar approach to a naval supply ship. Just thinking out loud here, not really sold on the idea, but maybe it'll lead to something better?

Yeah I agree, it would be nice to get a more realistic implementation of sub warfare, as long as it wasn't a micro nightmare. The whole staying out at see for 2-5 months, possibly more, without replenishment is kind of lame. Yes subs could stay out one or two months without replenishing, but that would mean they weren't that active and didn't shoot off their 14 torpedoes. Which wouldn't be common.
But yeah, if they could model this in game it would be amazing.

Sadly, this topic has already been thrashed to death in other Supply and Logistic threads.
The vanilla version of HOI IV is unlikely to have anything buildable like the U-boat Milch Cow variants.
Other specialised units like the JPN I-400 class submarines will also be abstracted.
It will be up to the modders to create these small, but strategically vital supply & log units for a realistic U-boat campaign.
