Hi,

I'm just about to see the movie U-571. I have heard a lot about it being full of lies/unrealism etc.
Can someone who have seen this movie tell me about what is not true?

After what I've been told it's pretty much true, just that the americans in the movie was English IRL. Hollywood always have to make the americans the heroes...

Take Pearl Harbour as an example. In the first movie, the one right after the war (cooperative with Japan), it ends with the japanese planes returning home to their ships. The americans had lost the Battle.
But in the new version, they take the same show, throw in some love, use better graphics, and, it ends with USA dropping the A-bomb over Japan. The last part has nothing to do with Pearl Harbour, but the movie can't end without the USA winning...

Was a rather exiting movie. Of course they make the Americans win, its Hollywood after all .

Actually, Das Boot should arrive in the mail in a few days.

I got Das Boot Directors cut with an hours extra footage! you MUST watch it in German with english subtiltles (well if you can speak german erm, turn off subtitles )

The movie Das Boot is based on a semi-autobiography book of the same name, by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim who served on a german submarine during wwII.

Exactly..the original version is the best war movie ever made..IMHO..

I ordered of course with german speech, I thought only germans dubbed foreign movies.
And it is also "special edition". Looking forward to it...

The book is even a little greater than the film. Gives really harsh impressions of fear, boredom and being lost in a tincan. Alone the Gibraltar episode is awesome....

Buchheim didnt like the movie too much. He praised the used technical thingies, saying the Boat itself was a masterpiece timewarping him back to WW2. He wasnt content with the acting, elevating himself over the actors that of course did NOT serve in a sub in WW2 and therefore had to act after their own impressions. Anyway he didnt like the acting for too much action.
Then, other Submariners didnt like Buchheim, calling him "Badegast" (spa tourist) for he only was war correspondent and not an U-Bootmann.

Well as I remember, that is the way his character, Lt Werner, is portraited in the book and the movie. As the "Badegast" who only can watch helplessly, while the rest of the crew fight for their survivel in the deep.

It works pretty well, with him as a more of a witness, than an active particpant. Because the other officers onboard often have to explain to him, and there by the spectatores, what is going on.

The resendment of the crew against him, is clear from the start of the movie, so it is not like he is trying to make some hero of himself. I dont think the scene in the engine room is in the first US version.

Das Boot is a beautiful movie, in fact, I think I'll watch it tonight. It is the best U-boat related movie ever.

IIRC it is based on two different events with different brits, who in the movie was combined to one with the same americans.
