So strange thing happened during my vanilla game of DW the other day, while claiming throne on Portugal and pushing a union through war, the ruler died and Milan who also claimed throne got the PU but I finish up the war and get the union as well so me AND Milan are both leading Portugal in a PU.
:blink: What? Does anyone know how this works out because when i saved and declared war on Milan, Portugal went back to war with me so then my ruler therefore declared war on herself and this is all very confusing. Who gets the partial income? Who inherits? How is this possible?
It should say it in the picture but im not sure I loaded it correctly so could someone please tell me how.

This sounds like a glitch. Theoretically, whoever's name appears as Portugal's ruler should be heading the PU.

If you notice any strange behavior, I'd just reload an old save or something since I doubt this is supposed to happen.

I looked at the save just now and my queen's name is there as ruler, but under it it also says that Milan is leading a personal union and the alliance option is grayed out because of the double union. So should I just go with it or change stuff around in the files?
Oh and thanks for the info simon, I guess PUs are only useful for their inheritance possibility...

It's a bug. I had the same, but it was with a small nation so I just used "annex" cheat, released them and then cancelled vassalization (no big deal, it was an useless minor anyway). I spent some good time trying to find a way to fix this thru savegames and the closest I came to was that "union=numberhere" line, couldn't find out what the ID meant, thought it was the monarch's ID (write monarch name in search box & it'll give you his stats, ID etc.), but it didn't add up and didn't work, so damn it.

Try a savegame editor, tho.

This is a pretty tough issue to dissolve, as whichever way they goes someone will be unhappy (and make a forum post about it). The only way to avoid this issue, exempting reworks affecting other aspects of PUs, is to make it impossible to demand a PU in the war settlement if they have already ended up the subject of another country by normal chance - or auto-WP such a war at that point. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't too popular and named as a bug, too, as it appeared that it suddenly was impossible to demand a PU in spite of using the proper cb.

So, which way is best? That's not entirely clear, in my opinion, but I'd love to see if a consensus could be reached.

Had this happen to me before. Was in my WC game, so I couldn't just let it go.
Basically, I warred the other PU leader hard enough, that their prestige was far away from zero, resulting in their PU getting cancelled. Still, there wasn't my king on the throne of the other land (Denmark, in my case), but instead some random Danish noble. But once my king died, magically, that noble died, too, so my heir was then king of both my nation and Denmark. Kinda strange, but if you're strong enough, to basically kill the other PU leader (including their allies, ofc, you want to beat them hard, so they lose a LOT of prestige), and have some free time, this will do it.

Try a savegame editor, tho.

union=
first="MLO"
second="POR"

find those lines in your savegame file and delete them. Also check that you indeed have union also by checking if there is line somewhere where your tag is in place of MLO.
