In my current 1066 game, the HRE has vassalised the pope pretty early. For some reason Heinrich IV decided to set up an antipope a few years later. Since then there's been an antipope from the HRE most of the time. Sometimes the antipope gets abolished, but a few years later a new one is created. Once the emperor even stripped the current antipope, who was also his brother, of the title just to appoint him again immediately, but with a different papal name.
