We were talking about HyperRPG having people to pay for a subscription in order to view the video of his stream.

Kohh's video is free to watch.

Ahh.. I got confused because HyperRpg isn't a person, it's a company. However, you are right, them streaming behind a paywall is not something I like very much at all.

Yes, how dare a company that creates and broadcasts original programming have some form of direct revenue stream.

How dare they have a business model for themselves that isn't "please give me all the things that I can sell for you"....

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

It's a moral issue.

I see we've moved on to the "think of the children" phase of this discussion. And that you somehow think you're entitled to free previews and footage of anything.

HRPG is a company with multiple locations and multiple employees. That puts it in a fundamentally different category than an ad revenue fueled lone streamer.

I don't want to turn this thread into a HyperRPG bashing one. Their business model seems fine. You tune in during the prime time and watch their shows, if you didn't catch it you pay for the VOD. Reasonable like most tv stations.
Except that their prime time is from 3:00 AM to 6:00AM here. And they have made it harder and harder for non Subs to watch their programming.
At first you could watch the VOD for free(untill like DFA ep 6-ish.) then they turned it off you had to wait a week and watch it on YT. Fair enough I guess it changes precious little. I can pay if I'm impatient. Now they hid the series behind ransom. It's not really about the money(maybe a little). I don't feel like I get something for paying. It feels like I get something back what I had before.

I was elated there were 15k watching someone play BATTLETECH.

Talk about brand exposure!

This exactly!

I know there's a population of folks who don't like that streamers are getting it early but there's a good chance that 75% or more of those viewers fell in the "on the fence" or "don't know about it" category, and to have him telling that crowd how much fun he's having is critical to the success of the game.

Even though I was laughing hysterically and yelling at the screen to shoot the turret generator while his BJ was getting torn to shreds by that AC turret.

I found it strange that all the releases of that mission 4 months ago had voice overs and Cohh's did not.

But I will admit it was extremely entertaining having him as the narrator/player of the game... his emotional responses were perfect.

His facial expressions for the Rock'm sock'm robot comment was priceless.

HyperRPG is the the content studio Jordan Weisman (head of HBS) created (along with Zac Eubank) and got set up shortly after the Kickstarter for BATTLETECH ended. They are surprisingly open about their practices and have an honesty hour where they explain some of the nut and bolts of running the studio.
Hyper Rabbit Power Go (Hyper RPG) is a gathering place for friends on and offline, centered around video and tabletop gaming, comic books, movies, and more. Hyper RPG pushes the boundaries of collaborative storytelling and shared gaming experiences across the web and around the world. We strive for inclusive content and representation. Created by Jordan Weisman (creator of Shadowrun, Battletech RPGs) and Zac Eubank (former showrunner of Geek & Sundry Twitch), everyone at Hyper RPG would like to welcome you to the Thumper family!

I read some brief disclaimer at the beginning of a stream (Cohh's?) that said something about muting of certain audio because it was copyrighted. I assume that's why previously-available voiceovers were now missing. I also assume that the cool historical intro had a voiceover that we couldn't hear. That would make a lot more sense.

I don't think their automated DMCA system is going to ID random voiceovers from a pre-release game as copyrighted content.

Any voiced over videos had accompanying subtitles. The intro did not, so we can safely assume it is wordless exposition and tone-setting.

Also, did you note that there is a base experience per mission and bonus xp for kills. so rotating pilots in and out of that Spider may be a priority until you have a lance that can do damage equally.

side note I like that they had the little identifiers under the OpFor that described the unit's condition..

The auto-muting that twitch does to vods is generally for music, and you can clearly see if anything has been muted as stretches of the time bar will be red when you mouse over it.

My problem with Hyper RPG: If you want to be a premium channel that does that fine. If you want to rely on viewer contributions and keep pimping for them fine. Dont do both, thats just obnoxious.

Edit: To put it another way, imagine if Netflix also had ads, or HBO had PBS style pledge drives in the middle of Game of Thrones. You'd be annoyed. Both provide high quality original content that costs money, and therefore charge you a premium for access.

I've been watching DFA on youtube, and was actually kind of impressed by how they integrated their 'pledge drives' into the show. It's the combination of that model with a subscription model that annoys me.

I'll freely admit that I'm probably a bit older than the typical twitch streamer/viewer and in general don't quite get the concept.

I especially liked the comment on the game being bas s on rompin stompin robots.

He also said a comment that had me excited and I believe it is true. When in the command center after the missions he said, l”Wow..this is something special.” In reference to the game. Having someone who knows little to no lore and being his first time playing it excited the shit outta me and I can wait. So looking forward to it’s sucess. Clan invasion here we come.

This is not about "entitlement", but advertisement.
There were other streams to watch the game, that is not the issue. The problem is that premium access has been granted to the game in order to PROMOTE the game, yet that content remains locked behind a subscription .?. On top of that someone else mentioned that HyperRPG is affiliated with HBS.

This is like paying a company to watch that company's advertisement! o_O

HRPG is a company with multiple locations and multiple employees. That puts it in a fundamentally different category than an ad revenue fueled lone streamer.

Good for them, I am not paying/rewarding their monetization model though.

I know there's a cozy interlinked relationship between HyperRPG and HBS. That's fine. Cross-promotion and corporate synergy aren't new. It's not trolling or abuse to say about a media company's product, "I'm willing to watch this with some ads (like youtube), but not pay a monthly fee." And I'm feeling like somehow HyperRPG is becoming a bit of a sacred cow around here because of its ties to HBS.

^Brings up some good points for me to respond to sir.

Greetings Mechwarriors,

Please consider: Expressing one's criticism or opinion in a respectful manner is appreciated as it helps inform the entities of community interests as they make decisions going forward, even when the respectfully phrased criticism or opinion reflects an unhappy feeling. However, it's not the same behavior as consistently posting the same negativity repeatedly in the same thread or especially across threads. Thats what would lead to such being either spamming, or trolling depending.

Also: Community members are welcome and encouraged to express respectfully phrased criticism and negative opinions, but not to make it personal or wage a campaign in doing so.

It's not about ties. Sometimes the how of a message is the problem, not the why of it. In this case there are community members that I would encourage to please consider the how of communication in posts moving forward.

There's quite a difference between constructive criticism, and fanning community damaging toxicity, and all begins with how we choose to communicate.

Final reminder. I really don't want to post this in another thread. Jumping threads does not allow us to avoid Forum staff requests and is addressed in the site rules.

Thank you.
