1) I see that some people say that he was horrible and that he knew nothing of the game. This is EXACTLY the people that you want to get excited and buy the game, if you want to have DLCs and expansions of the game. Keep calm and just help these people out, but for God's sake do not get angry or frustrated with them. We all need them. :)

2) Being a total Battletech ignorant myself, but a large turn-based games fan, I watched quite a lot of Amaro's multiplayer videos, so I already knew quite a lot of the innovative tactics like side-rotating and what the evasion markings are and what quite a lot of things do in battle, but the average player cannot be expected to have that knowledge beforehand. I watched Kohh's stream for 45 minutes (I am out of time today) and I found the tutorial quite lacking to be honest. A nice example was the evasion, where there was a pop-up message informing the player that the further he moves the more evasion he aquired, but there was no mention for the INDICATORS of said evasion and what each bar of evasion stands for, so the streamer missed those markers completely until he either noticed that he lost a bar of evasion after being shot at - or he read it from some comment on his Twitch chat. Another thing was the called shot. The streamer was flabbergasted to have it appear after a knockdown and he didn't even know which was a good target to go for (Central torso for the win) and I highly doubt that "two legs down = kill" rule was - or will be - in the tutorial.

A quick fix for those things for HSB could be the corresponding indicators of each thing mentioned in the tutorial pop-ups to briefly flash or change colours to attract the player's attention to them.

So, above all, patience. The players that know nothing about the game are the ones that will be crucial to the success of the game. I know that most people here are backers or old tabletopers or fans of the novels or all those things, but attracting new people is always a test to one's endurance, but a rewarding one if you can pass it.

P.S.
I am getting pumped for a pre-order. The streams ARE working.

That first stream segment was hilarious. The chat scroll sample gems like "This is like dark souls, only turn based and with mechs" and "Noooo, not Mech Dad!" had me rolling. His response to the Microsoft Market pop up had my sides in orbit. He was a perfect streamer to dump this game on.

I echo your sentiments that his lack of awareness of a lot of the game elements made the whole experience more sympathetic for his viewers that know little to nothing about Battletech. It also gave the viewers that did know a lot the chance to chime in and offer tips and explanations, which then put them into the seat of answering viewer game questions and take that burden off of him while he played the game. I've never seen or heard of this streamer before and I found him to be pretty entertaining.

Also, he turned nearly all of his streamlabs announcements off so the sounds and music from the game had minimal interruptions, if any at all. This is kind of a big deal when showcasing a new game because HyperRPG left all of his crap on and it was annoying as hell.

Guys also remember that Cohs' build was only ment for about 8 hours of play and was not even the full game. As seen as some icons did not even show up . Could it be even more polished for us later on SURE.
Don't be mad at some one for not knowing the game, never seeing the beta, not played Battletech for 20+ years.
Be mad at him for Save Cumming. HE LOST HIS LANCE he needs to live with that shame :p

I was literally fixing bugs in the second mission of the game, playtesting it, while he played it on twitch.

That was a hell of a mind bending experience.
I sincerely feel bad for you guys. Your offices must be one of the most busy places in Canada at the moment as the final launch draws closer. I have visions of Mitch on roller skates flying down the hallways.

That must have been fun. :)

I hope that someone at HBS is watching which key game mechanics he (and other streamers) miss and are looking at how to make them more apparent during the early part of the game. I'd think that would be a great way to help players new to Battletech have a fun time getting started with BATTLETECH.

One thing is that you could see how easy it was to learn the basics of the game for someone new to the whole thing.

Yeah it was painful at times when watching and knowing he made simple mistakes but they weren't game killers and making him feel defeated and not want to play, he just reloaded and tried a different tactic.

Note for new players: Always kill the turret generator first. That destroys all turrets and has no downside. Then you can focus on the enemy mechs and kill them.

Cohh's problem was he didn't pay attention or read the tooltips. It was painful to watch him flail about, when the information was all right there.

However his complete ignorance had the upside of making him genuinely surprised and excited by the cool things he could do with stompy murder bots, so a net bonus. He was clearly enjoying the game and that will hopefully boost sales.

Being a long time BattleTech guy... yeah... some of his stuff was cringe worthy. But.... overall the stream was good and I enjoyed watching him play. The only downside is the utter rage I feel at not being able to play. jerk
Anyway.. all in all a good experience and great for bringing non-BT people into the loving, but violent, fold.

Something I learned about watching XCOM pre-release preview streams: it's always the ones that don't know the game inside and out that are the most entertaining to watch, no matter how cringeworthy they are. The mark of a good turn-based game to me is when you see what another player is doing, and you're able to scream your lungs out at them going "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT YOU COULD'VE DONE THIS!".

Exactly, because they are exploring stuff, so they can be genuingly surprized with the mechanics of a game and they generate the "Hey, I wanna play that game too" vibe to their audience.

The mark of a good turn-based game to me is when you see what another player is doing, and you're able to scream your lungs out at them going "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT YOU COULD'VE DONE THIS!".

and then there is the "oh, for crying out loud, I am going to get this game and show this fellow how it is done" vibe, which also sells a lot of copies ;)

Like Mitch said, you can know zero things about Battletech and still pick up and play. Sure, you'll never maximize your resources nor take full advantage of the tools HBS gives you BUT, you can still blow shit up and have fun doing it.

Not everyone plays XCOM on legend and unlike MMOs where peer pressure dictates the most optimal choices for you, we can play the SP any way we want.

On the other hand, I'm a little curious why this guy got to be the first streamer. There are more popular strategy oriented streams out there. Does this Cohh, have a large Twitch following?
