Twitter: The Hoi3 engine now supports unittypes that can never be built through the normal interface.

Anyone care to venture a guess as to what this means? Maybe some special event that gives you a super defensive city-guard unit if your capital is encircled, or special "Home Guard" units in the U.K. once the war starts? Or am I mis-reading...

Could be that this is how they handle the event driven creation of special units i.e. Home Guard, Volkssturm, Partisan type units.
Another is the creation of one-off units that are unique (or experimental) and would throuw off the game balance if created en mass, I can't think of any off hand but it's a possibilty.
Hopefully Someone from PI can elaborate here on what purpose this feature is intended to serve (appart from it being a modders dream come true :D )

So maybe an event would create let's say a 10 units serial run of a certain type unit? Or even one. Like special forces.

But then it would be better to flag such production so the AI would not cancel it.

Its probably a combination of what was suggested above:A tool for modders so they can have event driven units, and so that rebels/partisans can exist. It certainly has nothing to do with alternate realities or anything...

I think we're likely all correct (except the guy who said Germans with Jetpacks, that's Battlefield 1942 stuff).

I like the idea that Partisans won't just be Milita, and that they are even further differentiated by type (from a previous dev. diary). This is so exciting...

Howabout units that dont fitt into common classification like german pocket battleships?

I don't think this is aimed at pocket battleships.

They are indeed difficult to model in HOI terms, but hopefully the new naval model should mean they can be fitted in.

It would be strange to make pocket battleships 'unbuildable' when the reasons Germany stopped building them were military and political, rather than technical.

I think it's more likely that we could see ships which were too outdated to be built in the 1930s modelled this way - for instance the German pre-dreadnoughts Shleswig-Holstein and Schleisen.

Actually, I think its probably simplier than whats been said here

Remember how Johan said there would be (min str, maybe min frontage, etc...)
I think this might mean that units could exists (like in battle scenarios or by event) that defy these boundries.
i.e. Assume that AT Bn's have a str of 1000 men and a frontage of 0.25, you could have 2 AT Bn divs for Ger use in a Russian invasion of Hungary and Romania scn set in 1944 even though they are below min str and frontage

I would assume that if you actually have to program the engine (especially the battle engine component) to understand units outside the pre-defined build limits

It woudl also make sense as this would allow modders (like the ones that want to make divs entirely out of Bns) to do this without the engine barfing

my 2 cents

(Actually, I would assume that this makes more sense the pre-dread option, because I don't see why they couldn't be defined with the system at hand, the components themselves just to be defined and viola, pre-built pre-dreads, even if they player can't build them because the components are marked 'obsolete' in game)

They're only difficult to model because they don't fit well in the cruiser or battleship categories. Far too slow for a cruiser, high-calibre heavy guns like a battleship (but few of them), cruiser-type armour.

It should be quite possible for the HOI3 ship model to handle them, in a way that HOI1 and 2 couldn't. I look forward to seeing how they're represented when I get my beta copy.

I agree,I just would like to see Pocket battleships with their haevy guns to be distinctive from other ships of same size.I allso hope general game unit arangement will be enough flexible to represent special characteristics of those and other ships.

Your observation about Schleswig-Holstein is great and I realy only can hope you are absolutely wright.Such outdated ships realy cant be placed under general game ship classification without haevy disturbing of realism.I think that ,at this point of evolution of HOI franchise ,we came to the point that we can ask and expect avoidance of such haevy inacuracies.We can hope that those "special" units are aimed to fix exactly this kind of problems.
Schleswig-Holstein was preadreadnought,practicaly 19.century ship.It was not even ww1 ship it was older.
