If your really desperate you might even try espionage efforts, like stolen enemy army trucks, ships or airplanes with crew speaking their language.

Although I do not doubt the ability of a spy ring to steal a truck. Smugglíng a 4 Ton Nuclear bomb is quite something else.

Well thats true. Might be more something for when or if you manage to bring the nukes down in size a little bit. Im not an expert on that subject though so not sure it fits in the timeline. I belive the largest trucks had a 2.5 ton cargo capacity so you might have to use several of them and assemble the nuke on site :p
(yeah now we are talking really desperate).

You also have to think of how many of these trucks were in motion at the time in the allies lines. Checking them all would be both time consuming and impossible.

But the rest of the post is still true when it comes to stolen enemy ships & airplanes for example.

No I don't agree at all. Little boy was 10 feet long and was shipped across the Pacific in a Heavy cruiser. The only unmodified plane of the war capable of carrying it into combat was the Lancaster (note not even a standard B-29 could). To the best of my knowledge no heavy cruiser class (or larger ship were stolen) and no Lancasters either.

My point was that nukes can be carried by all crafts from subs to even large torpedo boats if you make some modifications to them (both the nukes and the crafts). For example 4 torpedoes weight more than a Nuke do.
And that they can be carried by airplanes from TACs upwards aswell if your really really want them to. For example if you have no heavier planes available. Ju 88 according to wiki carries 3600kg maximum.

4tons is nothing compared to a sub displacement of 800+ tons.

They key is that your saying "standard" and "unmodified". Nothing when it comes to delivering nukes is standard. They used the Heavy cruiser because it could provide better protection, not because the nuke was so heavy it had to be carried by a Capital ship.

A Ju88 may be able to carry 3,600 kg worth of bombs, but it is only 47 feet long. This means the 33 foot long bomb bay they put in the modified B-29 is going to prove a real design challenge.
