@potski: nice coding, didn't see that earlier, I agree entirely :)

I think this should be a German decision. What should happen is that Germany, after meeting certain criteria perhaps, gets a decision to demand for their core on Danzig.

Quite. E.g. Germany being at peace, National Socialists being in power/Hitler being in office, Sudentenland occupied.

But it should certainly be a German decision!

Sounds about right to me. :)

Of course, some events could simply be the triggered consequence of certain decisions. For example, the German player choosing to trigger the 'Danzig or War?' decision (whenever he or she chooses to do so) will then fire the appropriate event for Poland, and perhaps some sort of generic warmongering event for the European Great Powers.

I wonder if events will lead to laws (Barbarossa doing poorly, losing lots of manpower, hence a conscription law) or if you can just institute them yourself without the need for prior...impetus, I suppose.

I am sure that all of the laws will have positive and negative effects -- conscription is a dissent hit; nationalizing industry.

Also, I always wanted a black-out law -- this was so common in WWII and I have never seen it in any of the MODs or anything. Like if that happened I think it should give either a slight boost to flak/AA in the province, or something like that.

I assumed that blackouts were assumed. They were virtually universal, afterall...

Not so! In NYCity, for example, we had the lights blazing for a long time. It was foolish, sure, but not until we lost a few ships (which the Germans presumed were British) did they institute it.

Major events in the game's timeframe should be just that.. events. I would hate for WW2 to start by the German player going into his diplomacy screen and hitting the "demand Danzig" button after meeting certain criteria.

There are no longer any Events as in HOI2, there are:
Country_Events
Province_Events
Country_Decisions
Province_Decisions
etc.

See my posts above. There is no way that there will now be an Event which triggers on 1 September 1939 starting the war, regardless of what else is happening. Germany MUST do something, and Poland MUST do nothing for it happen. And both must have fairly specific conditions in terms of their alignments, ruling parties, etc.

@rmdsc: your suggestion that Danzig should be a German Decision makes some sense, but they are not mutually exclusive. It is possible that the Poland Decision to give up Danzig will only have the Potential to be made after Germany has made a Decision of it's own to demand it. This is different to the Anschluss, for ex, as Austria never had any real say in the matter (ignoring the rigged plebiscite afterwards when it was already a fait accomplit). Danzig needs both parties to decide something as there are three possible outcomes:
- Germany doesn't demand (interests lie elsewhere, ahistorical game)
- Germany demands and Poland accepts
- Germany demands and Poland refuses

The German Decision for Danzig can have an effect which sets a variable such as danzig_demanded, and the Danzig Province Decision then checks whether this variable has been set, before firing for Poland to make its Decision. Even then I would have the effect of Poland refusing the Decision, giving Germany a casus belli, not actually starting the war. A German human player must be able to choose when to launch the invasion.

In this way, sets of "events" can be linked together to lead to complex outcomes. For instance, this could also be linked to German and Soviet Decisions for M-R Pact, and undoubtedly would be linked to possible party events that might be triggered. For instance, if Poland refused the Demand and there is a strong National Socialist Party in Poland, and National Unity is low, it might attempt a coup.

Only diff between 'Castle Wolfenstein' and real life is that the Germans succeeded in the game :D

I thought Laws were choices made in the politics screen to supplement the ideology sliders. I hope it's that, because the ideologies always became hopelessly vague.
Japan clearly belonged to the Axis set of ideologies, yet wasn't very strongly authoritarian. There is no way at all to represent different political factions within the ideologies. How do you place Strasser and Rohm (if they were alive) in reference to Hitler. Further to the left? Makes them more moderate, which isn't exactly accurate. What, other then changing you ministers (which you can just change back) do the various Japanese Army factions have separating them.

If you have laws defining your stance for example on workers rights, relation to the church, civilian conscription etc. you can more clearly define a countries ideological position then HoI2 allows.

Well, honestly, why?

Altho wars can start through less one-sided scenarios, in the case of WW2, this is pretty much exactly what happened. The Germans chose how, when and why. Hitler could have decided to wait till spring 40, or earlier in the year, or whatever. It was pretty much up to him, because he forged the casus belli.

I suppose that there could be other decisions, with more stringent triggers, that could allow the Allies to provoke Germany into war much later, once conditions have shifted in their favor. But I really doubt it would have occurred. This game is basically about a war "Made in Germany".
