TWF Dev Diary #10: Playing From Opposition

This week's dev diary is about playing from opposition. Based on reservations I can predict that many of you will be the only players in your nations (and therefore always in the driver's seat). On the other hand, some of you can except to spend a lot of your time in opposition.

384px-Tim_farron_2014.jpg

1. Some of you more than others

So how do you play from opposition? Playing from political opposition is much lower intensity than playing as a nation's primary player, but just because you've been kicked out of your Prime Ministerial/Presidential role often doesn't mean that there's no you can do. I will often give opposition players PP. You can use PP to try to force policies through the national government, but unless you have a divided government (ie: as in the United States) this will be quite difficult. If you control statehouses or local councils or whatever the devolved form of government (if any) is in your nation, you can spend your PP to make policy on that level. Obviously, you won't be able issue orders to institutions you no longer control - ie: you (generally) can't control the national army from political opposition.

You can also submit orders that have nothing to do like policy, like trying to find a new leader to replace the one who screwed up badly enough to get you into opposition in the first place. You may also hold rallies, run election campaigns, etc. Such actions generally cost very little PP, although they will usually still cost some.

500px-Nick_Clegg_Bournemouth_rally.jpg

2. Very, very little PP

If two players are in coalition due to parliamentary mechanics or some such, they will both get PP, and can both make policy within the portfolios they agreed on in their coalition agreement.

Some of you are playing as armed rebels, which are opposition players but obviously have much different mechanics. Rebel groups controlling territory are basically like little nations in their own right.

8cBtFYt.jpg

3. Not all rebel groups though

Now let's touch on what happens if you run out of PP, or what happens if you try to submit an order you don't have enough PP to pay for.

Running out of PP as an opposition player has no consequence. Running out of PP as a primary player (or a player in a coalition) is very bad. It causes 0 PP events, which are nearly always bad, and can range from a mere setback to a catastrophe. However, 0 PP events in countries with more than one player will usually end in an outcome that gives someone in your country PP to continue to submit orders. It's not necessarily you. (Such a PP drop may be delayed by a year or two after the event as well.)

300px-Al-Furq%C4%81n_Media_Abu_Bakr_al-Baghdadi.png

4. Someone

If you run totally out of PP as an opposition player, you can still submit orders, but your choices are now very limited. The one thing you can generally do without any PP is sack your party/faction leader, although you may not have much say in who replaces him. In many instances you may have no choice but to sit back and wait for the next elections (which is principally when PP is doled out).

300px-Stand_in_opposition_city_hall_boston.jpg

5. Why did that man step on an elephant?

Some of you may play as nonviolent political oppositions in countries that don't have competitive elections. Good luck with that.

500px-WhiteRibbonRussia.jpg

6. I didn't even know Russia HAD a political opposition

Also I'm going to talk for a moment about how to get kicked from you country. First OOC. When it comes time for signups, I will ask everyone who signs up to play to promise/swear to play their faction seriously and in good faith. Though I will generally leave how much you stick your party/faction's real-life policies to you, if you do something I regard as in flagrant derelict of the above promise, I'll kick you from your faction. I don't expect to have to do this, but some of the chatter on IRC has been certain people discussing some very off-the-walls ideas, so I thought it fair to warn you.

Getting kicked due to IC events is harder. Generally if your faction becomes inviable - if its totally dissolved - or if you're a dictator who's been overthrown and your dynasty dismantled - you'll be kicked from your nation. I may invite you to take over some other country or faction, provided that I can fabricate stats for it. If your faction ISN'T dissolved, but you screw up very, very badly, I may still kick you from your faction. Note that although you play a faction, not a person, I will personify your orders as coming from a faction leader. (Ie: If you as the US Democrats gave an order to build public housing, I would probably say in the update that the policy came from President Obama.) Generally speaking, if your current faction leader manages to cling to power despite the screw-up, you won't get kicked.

360px-44_Bill_Clinton_3x4.jpg

7. Pictured - not a big enough screw up

Also also, as an update to last week's dev diary, I have implemented tariffs and they are working well.

I have also implemented labor force participation rates, and that's working well too.

Forex is still completely broken.

TWF is scheduled to start when PttP (my IAAR) ends, and PttP is fast coming to a close. It may have its last update today or tomorrow. So appropriately enough, the next Dev Diary is going to be about the End of the World.

8. You knew it was coming

TH3, what about Iran/terrorist groups who "promise/swear to play their faction seriously and in good faith" by nuking nations/the world?

((I can't really answer that question.))

((On a separate note, I forgot to mention that the central bank AI has also been added, and that's working reasonably well. It means you don't have to control monetary policy - previously discussed - manually, and can instead give your central bank vague directives about its priorities. It will execute on them automatically. Alternatively, you can ignore monetary policy altogether and the AI will work it out for you.))
