Turning Independent

Just now I successfully finished my Silesian war of independence against Poland and am now an independent realm as per the Independent Realm mapview, but for some reason still cannot set my own Crown Laws. Do I have to usurp the Kingdom of Poland in order to set my own Crown Laws (although I'd much rather stay as Silesia than become Poland)?

Yes, you have to be a king to be able to set the crown laws.

Hey, I'm new to CKII and need some help. I'm trying to go independent from HRE with Bohemia. I currently have the King of Bohemia title. Is it possible to go independent?

What I did with Silesia was declare war upon Poland (there was a special casus belli "Independence"). So you'd have to beat the HRE in your independence war to be on your own.

Unless you see half the HRE going for their independence to do not even try or save money to hire every mercenary group that their is, the emperor can bring to bear 30K+ troops with no problem and even if you beat them he can recruit 1k a month or 2 of new troops.

I tryed as the kingdom of Bergundy with having Hungery as a ally and 11k mercenaries and I was crushed in short order
