In 811 Emperor Staurakios was in dire situation. Following the Battle of Pliska he was paralysed from the neck down and unable to govern.

2 parties were formed then claiming the throne. The Court Party headed by the Emperor's sister Prokopia and her husband Michael Rangabe (intended to raise Michael to the throne) and the Imperial Party headed by Emperor Staurakios (intended to raise Empress Theophano as Empress Regnant to the throne)

Intrigue was intense and the Emperor attempted to impose his own wife as ruler by calling an assembly of the nobles and threatened them that if they did not accept his wife as Empress Regnant he would then abolish an old law of Emperor Augustus which gave all powers and authorities to one man and transfer them back to the Senate thus restoring the ancient Roman Republic.

So long story short the Court party launched a coup the same night deposed Emperor Staurakios and proclaimed Michael as Emperor.

Having said that has anyone ever turned the Byzantine Empire into a huge Republic in the game?

yes, but it bugged out during a succession and I lost the empire ( it kept removing the designated heir title from the brother I wanted to follow and I ended up switching religion and becoming feudal again).
