There was a bug that would make one of the possible outcomes be stuck forever and repeat in every game, but I think it got fixed.

I know it is not every game. It seems to happen more often than not. I know I know "confirmation bias", blah, blah, blah ..

Is there a way to turn it off?
besides switching the DLC off i dunno

I know an RNG bug existed (and might still exist; not sure it got fixed in 3.1) where the RNG seeding was busted so you almost always got the same result. What I can say is I usually got Tempest and didn't in my last playthrough, so that's obviously something of note.

Use Console Command:
Code:
effect if = { limit = { has_global_flag = gray_goo_crisis_set } custom_tooltip = "Gray Tempest"}
(From the Wiki)

If it writes Gray Tempest into the console, Grey Tempest is set as the L Gate Outcome, so restart.
If it doesn't, you can continue playing and will get one of the other three outcomes.

I intentionally shortened the Commant to only show you whether the Gray Tempest is active.
If you'd prefer to know the outcome, see the longer Console Command on the Wiki.

I like the Tempest, but the crisis is obviously designed to be fought by the player and now most of the time it gets triggered randomly by the AI, often at a point where it simply cannot bear the brunt of the initial invasion and seldom if ever recovers from it. In my last two games, the first wave of the Tempest has erased 2/3rds of the Galaxy and made dozens of worlds uninhabitable, with the AI acting as if it simply wasn't there.

The solution is simple: Do not remove the Gray Tempest but significantly reduce the chances of AI empires breaking into the L-Cluster if the Tempest is the outcome and/or if the Player Empire doesn't have any L-Gates within its territory. Also, I've noticed that the AI simply ignores "focus" Council resolutions, so maybe that needs a pass, too.

In my opinion, the game gears you up to the opening of the L gates as the first test. And if you align yourself with that, you’ll build up any star bases that have those gates but more than anything know to expect some challenging fleet sizes and have a fleet that’s comparable or better. That’s easy for the player once ‘bitten’ to expect and plan for to some degree. At least to position your fleet at your friendly star base, until your able to enter the Terminus and take on probably 3+ Tempest fleets and hold the system and stem the ‘flow’.

The trouble is as you say that the AI is never able to handle it, in most cases. It’s meant to be a pre mid game crisis. To me that creates a pacing problem. The same problem happens when the mid game event hasn’t been resolved and / or the galaxy hasn’t recovered and the end game crisis starts and it’s just unwinnable mainly because of a un-cooperative AI. Not helped that democracy wouldnt treat a crisis differently to any other resolution.

I like a challenge but it can be unreasonable and largely stem from a real need of things being redesigned a bit to suit single player campaigns more.

At least in my opinion anyway.

Interesting. The AI tends to be better the more resources it has available.

When are the Gates normally being opened?

How many empires are usually left when the gates get opened?
usually something between 2340 and 2400, in my current game around 2350 when my neighbour empires had ~30K power fleets, and those are the weaker ones

around 25% get destroyed by then, which leaves more than 13

they also manage to form federations quite often so they still wield additional fleet power

though i tend to play rather tall until late game so they've got all the time, space and resources to grow and flourish

it's also not always the tempest, pretty often that dessonwhatever empire spawns and i've also noticed a few times the drakes

I think it is fine addition to game start options. That is the purpose of game settings.
There could be a problem of AI not being able to handle it.
In past indeed it happened more often than one might imagine.
My spawn: around +130, bot before 100 but not pass 150.
There could be interaction with AI mod and higher difficulties. More resources from AI -> less economy fails -> better shot at dealikng with GT.

Interesting. I was just asking because in the last discussion about this people said the AI opens the Gates way to early (before endgame) but no one ever gave a date earlier than what you said which also aligns with my experience.

I play Admiral, 30 empires, huge galaxy, 2Xcrisis and 10 custom empires. Seems I've seen the gray tempest around 2320 or so. I never go after the Lgate myself. So it is always the AI. I seem to get the GT frequently and see the Khan less frequently. At least that is what it seems like. Are they mutually exclusive or can you get both?

I have enjoyed the GT in the past. So I lke it in the game it just seems it pops up frequently. I know that you have to build starbases at L gates and wormholes. But mid game I'm not bale to have starbases powerful enough to stop them. So I get annoyed having to chase them all over the place for 40 years.

I've never seen the AI fully handle them.
