I don't understand. Colonial nations are the best thing in the expansion/patch, and yet so many people hate it. I just don't get it.

To me this new colonial system looks like reversed vassalization mechanic. You create overseas vassal from territory you own and it eventually become independent.
Also as I written earlier it messes your trade game in Americas. For nations which don't trade in the west Europe node those nations are worthless income wise. Another thing is that interaction with them is very limited. Control over territory is also important, they just don't feel like part of my country.

I just wonder if colonial nations are really historically accurate...
Sort of. Outside of their homelands, nations never had direct control of their lands during this time period. It was all handled by local governors. That's what the colonial nations represent in the Americas. The Portuguese and Spanish Viceroys are a good example of this.

What is there to like? All you get is some money... money that you would get if those places were your colonies, heck you would get MORE money from colonies as gold is unaffected by tariffs. Besides money you get manpower, force limits, naval force limits, bonuses from trading/producing American goods, all that is now gone. And we got very little in return.
I would like colonial nations to be an option during game start... just like DLCs and Ironman are.

You also get a vassal that deals with protecting it's own land, protecting it's own coasts from pirates, which is my main problem with colonies as it was. Plus it makes it easier to see when and how they're gonna revolt, it makes the play between getting more money and keeping the vassal harder and more interesting...

You still get forcelimits, and from what I can tell the trade bonuses too. In my Italian colonial game (I was stupid and forgot I wouldn't be able to do anything for collecting the trade, but w.e) I still get the tobacco bonus despite not directly owning a single province in the New World or partaking in that trade at all. The forcelimits and bonus income are nice, and I'm not having to worry about upgrading those forts myself.

I absolutely despise Colonial Nations, they have taken the all of the fun out of colonizing the Americas. I like having direct control of EVERYTHING.

I hope they never have them in EU5, whenever that comes out.

P.S. The fliud sector in Stellaris would be a better way to form colonial nations than the arbitrary 5 colonies and poof, those colonies belong to someone else.

1) Colonial Nations are very powerful. I achieve basically infinite money with England by 1600. Can throw mercs at the Ottomans forever and bleed them dry.
2) This thread is from 2014. Impressive Necromancy.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I don't think CNs are going anywhere. You could post a thread in the suggestion section asking for a toggle in the settings to disable them.
