As the title says, is it possible to turn off "Colonial Nations"? I am colonizing North America as Zhou at the moment but then an event popped up saying there was a new colonial nation in California and took all my North American colonies. Is there any way I can re-incorporate the colonial nation back into my empire or to turn off this event altogether? I don't mind if theres an option to release the colonial nation as a vassal or if rebels spawn and form one, but I hate how it forms automatically.

Also the wiki here says I need to buy the "Conquest of Paradise" DLC to have Colonial Nations but I haven't even bought it yet.

Without Conquest of Paradise, you can't play as a colonial nation and your ability to interact with them (I believe) is limited. Colonial nations themselves are a free (patch) addition.

Colonial nations requiring the DLC to form was erroneous prerelease info. They will always form in 1.4 if you have five self-sufficient colonies in the same colonial region in the Americas. You need the DLC to play AS one.

Ok thanks for that clear up. But is there a way to turn this option off? I want a single overpowering Zhou Empire and not an empire plus 5 colonial nations that steal my colonies.

Ok. First of all, having 5 or more colonies in a Colonial Region automatically forms a colonial dependency. It gives you half its trade power and a percentage of its entire income depending on tariffs - you can raise then, but doing so too much makes them want to break away again. No, they can't be annexed: they already are parts of your country, remote enough to form their local governments. And CoP is needed, among other things, to PLAY as these colonial dependencies, but their general mechanics are part of patch 1.4.

They ARE your colonies. The give you trade power and tariffs. EDIT: they also contribute to your forcelimits.

Oh so I can't annex them...

Oh well, I guess there's no point colonizing the Americas anymore if all it does is basically give me vassals.

So the only way to turn it off is to revert to an older version? Is there anyway to reannex the colonial nations?

I remember someone finding out that you can mod the number of provinces needed for a Colonial Nation to form. I guess that if you put a large number there (like 50), a colonial nation would never form.

Oh well, I guess there's no point colonizing the Americas anymore if all it does is basically give me vassals.

Vassals that give you trade power and pretty Tariffs which you can increase, not to mention that they don't count towards your Diplomatic Relations limit. It is a less painful way to grow than by conquering Europe until you come to the point where AE, Coalitions and Coring times make it impossible to expand.

Yes.

Change MAX_CROWN_COLONIES in defines.lua to an absurdly high number and they shouldn't form.

In the defines.lua :

Code:
MAX_CROWN_COLONIES = 4

Change to arbitrary high number to stop them from forming.

THat's assuming paradox hasn't decided to add this thing here for no reason.

EDIT:

Changing it works for me.

Oh, that does help a bit. But I still don't like seeing something other than the letters "ZHOU" over North America. Whenever I see another name in large letters on the map, I get the urge to conquer it.
Now that you mention it, what ARE your colonial underlings named? "Zhou California?"
