The last (and only) interactive AAR I tried to join ended up keeling over dead not that long after I jumped in so I may be a harbinger of doom. I'll think it over while I'm sleeping. Do you think I should read a bit of the other thread to see what it's like behind the curtain? (EDIT) Also I'm rather unfamiliar with how things were historically in that time/place which might be an impediment to playing along 'properly'?
1) As a candidate member, you have little no influence on thread deadness.
2) Historical knowledge is not needed, just read the OP of the admin thread.
3) I'm sure we'll all love you.

The thread moves fast, though, so I advice you to stay active if you join.
4) If you can't follow the thread anymore, just ask me to summarize.

Enough reasons to join, aren't there? :)

Sirk, the following are acceptable reasons not to join the AAR.

That is all. :) Don't worry about my interactive AARs dying, unless it's by self-inflicted wound. ;)

It's there again. And it's a good lot of fun! This month's edition is rather short (only four articles), but juicy.
From next month onward, the AARlander will undergo some great changes, but you'll read more about that at the end of this edition.

Avindian (and other writers), I'll be sending you the banner soon to post in other AARs.

Speaking of publications, the First Edition of the Red Star....

30.VI.1936 Edition
By Cadet Field Correspondent, Vasily Grossman

Meet the Politburo - A New Broom Sweeps Defence

The new year sees the Defence Ministry taking on a new People’s Commissar, Julia Rakobolskaja. Despite her Polish origins and American parents, she has come to represent the modern Soviet young woman.

Comrade NK Rakobolskaja is fresh faced and energetic, eager to serve the State in whatever position she can. She has been taken under the personal tutelage of the General Secretary who has paid close attention to her progress. It is said that Comrade Stalin has devoted hours in private with Comrade Rakobolskaja, in educating in the ways of the Soviet Union and its military might. Sometimes they even work through the night as the Comrade is often seen leaving the General Secretary’s rooms in the early morning, sleepy and dishevelled after an exhausting night of manoeuvres.

And the hard work is paying off as the young Comrade has thrown herself into her new responsibilities, reviewing our command structure and future aircraft needs. We can only expect great things from her in the future.

New Tanks for May Day Parade

This year’s parade provided a surprise for the crowd as the Red Army showed off its new BT5 tanks. Ten new divisions have been made out of the scrap metal from the old Tzarist battleships, forging modern tools of war for the workers’ army. Only the most reactionary spectator could bemoan the loss of

Onlookers marvelled at the new tanks’ sleek design and manoeuvrability as they raced up the boulevard outside Red Square. The new People’s Commissar for Stavka, Comrade Vatutin, has declared them the most modern of tanks in the world and a marvel of Soviet ingenuity. And Comrade NK Education Yakushev has hinted that the BT5’s are just the beginning of even more advanced tanks as the skills of our design teams grow.

Although, some training will be required for the drivers soon….

Red Wall Takes Shape

Comrade Marshal Tukhachevsky and Comrade NK Vatutin have laboured long and hard to help reshape the defence of the State. Their efforts have been rewarded with the miraculous increase of the number of our divisions by another 39 rifle divisions.

The Red Army will form a wall of bayonets along the State’s frontier, protecting our Socialist paradise from the avarice of the Capitalists, and the corruption of the Fascists.

And the General Secretary clearly approves, promoting Comrade NK Vatutin to the rank of Major General, the first to receive the restored rank titles. We can only wait for the next brilliant idea to spring forth from the fertile mind of this young genius.

The Pain In Spain Falls Mostly In the Plains

Regrettably, war has come to Spain just as the proletariat had wisely chosen a progressive Socialist government to lead then to emancipation from the reactionary bourgeoisie. Despite initial promise, our Socialist brethren are hard pressed by the Fascist forces.

The General Secretary acted swiftly to aid the rightful government of the Spanish people. Unfortunately we are unable to send troops and equipment directly to aid our friends on the barricades. Comrade Stalin has wisely pointed out the risk of our technologically advanced tanks and aircraft being seized by the Capitalist navies blockading the Spanish coast to deny our comrades succour. We do not wish our foes to gain such a windfall of such technologically superior machines.

However, Comrade Marshall Tukhachevsky has arranged for a cadre of trainers and military specialists to travel to Spain to assist in the training of the Spanish Republican forces in our advanced tactics, and to observe the progress as the Socialist force sweep their opponents from the field. The team will be led by Comrade General Rokossovsky, one of the progressive new minds of the Red Army.

Given the recent fall of the old Republican capital of Madrid, the People’s Commissar of Foreign Affairs, Comrade Anastasia Petrova, has kindly offered to safeguard the Spanish gold reserve by transferring it to Moskva to avoid any catastrophe should the new capital of Barcelona fall.

Subject to motivation, I hope Comrade Grossman can keep us update to date with the military aspects of the Soviet Union after each update. It also depends on whether his good friend, Major General Vatutin, can survive in the Politburo.

A Day in the Office

Konstantin Ivanovich Gey sat back in his chair and took a long drag on his cigarette. Swivelling around, he looked out of his office window and into the snow covered streets outside the Kremlin. There were very few people out, and those that were wandering the streets walked quickly, with their eyes pointedly away from the Kremlin H.Q. Gey smiled cruelly and turned back to his table. Picking up one of the many documents littering his already dirty desk, he frowned as he read the latest report.

“More and more reports about these damned lazy farmers” he growled, as he reached for his half-empty glass of Vodka. Downing the rest in one go, Gey then turned and shouted out the door for more. Turning his attention back to the document he saw that the farmers were not only failing to meet the quota, but some had the nerve to avoid going to collectivized farms! One small farming community, the town of Obkin according to the document, had actually dared to stage a protest against the plan! Gey’s face mottled in rage as he puffed angrily on his cigarette. “Those idiots!” he suddenly screamed, “Do they not see that they are directly aiding the kulaks!” While Konstantin was still spluttering with rage his personal aide, Aleksandr Pavelovich, quietly entered the office, and cleared his throat.

Gey stopped, mid-rant, and raised an eyebrow at Aleksandr. “Your drink Comrade-Commissar.” Pavelovich said smoothly, as he replaced Gey’s empty bottle of Vodka with a full one on the table. Gey stared at Pavelovich, seemingly torn about something, before shrugging and bluntly stating “Aleksandr, what is your opinion on this bloody town?”

Pavelovich looked at Gey with blank expression, before taking the proffered document and quickly scanning it. “Well Comrade-Commissar” he began, “it is clear to me that they are aiding counter-revolutionary forces, and are obstructing the work that Comrade-Secretary Stalin has ordered, and the work that you are desirous of doing.” With a pleased nod, Gey took another drag of his cigarette before asking, “And what is your suggestion on what we should do to them?”

Pavelovich again looked at Gey, this time with a condescending expression, “Well they are obstructing progress, so we should liquidate them.” Gey sighed, and shook his head. “You are not thinking about the bigger picture. If you ever want to be more than an aide you must learn to do this.” Pavelovich lost his look of contempt, and anger flashed across his face, “Well Comrade, what is your plan.” He asked impudently. Gey stared at Pavelovich until the man broke eye contact and looked down at the floor.

“My plan, Aleksandr, is to have all men from the ages of 16 to 45 liquidated. Half of the remaining men and boys will be sent to the collectivized farms, the other half will be sent to work in the mines in Siberia. As for the women and girls, they shall be split likewise. It is best to crush resistance swiftly, while keeping the people working. Divide and conquer is the maxim I shall apply here. You are dismissed Aleksandr.”

Pavelovich nodded, his face ashen white, and quickly exited the room. As soon as the door was closed behind Pavelovich, Gey counted to 30. As soon as he reached 30 he burst out laughing, and clutched at his sides as he recalled the terror and anger on Pavelovich’s face. Still laughing, Gey topped up his glass of Vodka, and wrote out a death notice for Aleksandr Pavelovich for disobeying and disrupting the chain of command and for supporting and encouraging counterrevolutionary ideals and ideas, as well as many other charges that came to mind.

“Heh” Gey thought with a smile as he sipped his Vodka, “I am sure Aleksandr will do well... farther east. He could learn much of what respect means.”

Turning his attention back to the many documents cluttering his desk, Gey thought to himself “Divide and conquer. It always works.”

((Here is a short look into the slighty unbalanced mind of Konstantin Ivanovich Gey. An interesting character I feel! :p))

Whilst it is fun to get into the role play, can I please just remind everyone that there are certain topics not to be included in HOI AAR's. The relevant post is here. From a Soviet perspective, the G-word is a no no, as it is still distressing to some people (I have in laws through my brother who are Ukrainian and they can get quite animated when talking about the relatives they lost). So just think creatively about how you can obliquely refer to this without actually mentioning it. People writing German AAR's can do it, so can we.

Davout is exactly right. Let's not break forum rules.

I did like the post, Tapscott, but again, I'd like some warning before you post. :)

Woops, didn't know we couldn't mention those! Thanks for the heads up, and for the link to the thread. I'm not used to posting in HOI3 forums, so I tend to forget the rules. And yeah, I will give you a heads up next time Avindian!
