This.

Please let's not try to retroactively change history based on modern nationalist propaganda. It serves no one.
Um.. the Turks have been calling it Türkiye since the country declared its independence, so it’s not a new thing at all. And I’m pretty sure Erdoğan just wants to distance the country’s spoken English name from the tasty bird, which… is literally one of the least consequential/controversial things he and his government have undertaken.

On the contrary, it's quite consequential - turkeys get their name from Turkey, because the English language is just entirely scuffed.

You got me there, however…… according to bing:
The name "turkey" originates all the way back in the 1540s, when the term was originally used to describe a bird imported into Europe from Madagascar—by way of Turkey. "This bird was a type of guinea fowl, Numida meleagris —unrelated, or not very closely related, to what we now call turkeys," explains Carrie Gillon, co-founder of Quick Brown Fox Consulting, who holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and co-hosts the linguistics podcast The Vocal Fries.
So it’s technically a misnomer since the bird we now call turkeys are unrelated to the ones that got their name from the country!

On a serious note, I can’t fault the OP, they were as courteous as they were succinct in their request. There is no reason to dismiss them out of hand. I personally like extra bits of flavor like that, German Reich instead of Empire etc.. I’d probably prefer to see Nippon instead of Japan too. But those are just my own preferences.

It’s still commonly called Turkey in English. I feel like it’s not that necessary. For the era, it’s feels out of place. Imagine for example Siam was always called Thailand or Iran was always called Persia. And those are two examples are are in the era or close to it (that should be represented as name changes, because they aren’t for some reason). Türkiye is not that close to the era, so sticking with Turkey is perfectly fine in my opinion

As I said in the HoI4 forum when you posted the exact same thread there

The game needs to be accessible though and at some point that means striking a balance between historicity, endonyms and accessibility.

HoI4 would be more difficult for many players if these countries were named, for example
  • Großdeutsches Reich
  • Aotearoa
  • Царство България
  • सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल
  • 西北三馬

The same is true for Victoria 3.

The game needs to be accessible. It's possible that in many years time, Turkiye will become more commonplace than Turkey in English speaking contexts. But today it's not there yet.

I now declare the official Turkish name of the country to be Türkiye Cumhunwalesъ.

Seriously, go rule your own language.

Recently we have changed the country's official English name to Türkiye.
Almost nobody outside of diplomatic services and certain newspapers is going to honour that.

Partly because most L1 English speakers don't know how to type a ¨.

I'm Transylvanian. My city, together with all of Transylvania have Hungarian city and region names in Vic3 and most other PDX games I played, rather than the Romanian ones I've known all my life.

You know what I do about it? Nothing. It's historical. Most maps at the time would have shown the Hungarian name. Most Anglophones at the time would have called it Turkey not Türkiye. No need to go around retroactively changing history.

It’s very easy to mod it, going by past Paradox Games. I hate how Byzantium is called Byzantium since no one called it that even in their own time and mod it to the Roman Empire in EUIV. It should be in the localisation folders.
