I've tried to find out what caused the terrible lag yesterday. I got a sort of explanation in Finnish, doesn't make any sense to me but I hope it makes sense to the computer geeks out there...

Basically a lighnting struck on Sunday afternoon an automatic phonecentral which also has some ADSL "routers" (don't know if that is the correct translation). It was not in this area, but the ADSL traffic from there were "rerouted" to use the same "router" as this rural area (I live in a small village outside the big bad world). As the fried "router" handled a part of the traffic of St.Michel (Mikkeli), and there was a big horse-trout-races ("The St.Michel Trout") there yesterday, it meant that this router had all of the sudden ten times more traffic than usually. When I asked what the heck a horse-race has to do with Internet connections, I was told that the betting is done over internet.

Sounds weird to me, but that's what I was told  The end result was that I probably had a ridiculously low connection speed.

Thank's to Mowers for organizing the splendid game :) Thank's to Hans, Artemis and PeterE for the support they showed during the ***** lag-time I had as Venice. My apologies to all for the inconvenience the lag caused :(

PS. I was sure Johan is going to kill me, I know I would have used rather foul words if it had been "my" nation... I told everyone yesterday that they see a dead man typing here once Johan finds this crap out, despite my frantic explanations... Obviously Johan is however a bigger man than I would have been in a similar situation :)

PS2. If Timurids would have been left alone (ie not issued with two player nations at war with the Timurids), it would have had the possibility to grow into a counterpower for Ottomans. As it was, the Timurids had to plead Ottomans to come to help, which effectively meant Ottomans gained full hegemony in the area. Timurids would still have had a chance to gain the lost lands back (and subsequently release Persia as was my intention) but the AI is not able to handle with rebellions. The Golden Horde situation shows that: In the middle of the rebellions the AI started to build a manufactory!!! But when Johan personally asked *me* to sub, what could I do? I thought I had for once acquired the spot in the sun... "Everybody is famous for 15 minutes". OTOH, it would have been a nightmare (possibly even worse) with the Timurids too...

How about a rule where anybody who takes more than 1 loan must *immediately* contact mowers. Then if Mowers thinks it necessary, he can assign a responsible player to talk to them and make sure their finances are in order?

Venice is by and large now fixed, so no long term worries.

Regarding the Timurids. Its all a bit of a mess, but I am not convinced that they could have acted as a counter weight to the Ottomans, even if they had been brought in early, they get too many nasty events.

However, one of the objectives now will be to station 1-3 players in that region so that at least one powerful nation emerges that can provide some sort of counter balance to the Ottomans. I will be doing this in all of the regions that adjoin the Ottomans. The Ottomans will be alternatively AI driven and human player driven with various players. Hopefully this will create a situation where as by 1500 we can once again have the Ottomans as a full time slot.

I would like to have at least options like Wyvern concerning the Ottomans future. I worked for this expansion.;)

*chuckle*

The dedicated opposition you faced was Serbia.

Wyvern had it *slightly* harder.

So, sorry, the answer is definitely no.

So no.

Wyvern had it "slightly" harder? England basically offered him France. Is it my failure that all players failed to unite in the face of OE? It was one after another all thinking they would be the one to be at peace with the OE.

And they couldnt unite because they were brought in seperately, sporadically and changed rapidly- so technically you can blame me

But the answer is still no.

So OE will be played by AI or other players now? Whilst Wyvern becomes some sort of dutch-culture France??

Would be nice to see the options. And it would be nice why OE is punished for playing too good. Or is the scenario setup blamed or the player setup?

Heh, if I had had even *1* diplomat in the beginning I would have used more aggressive diplomacy with the Mames. But when I got the first diplomat in 1420 the Byzantine situation was all but over, so Mames allied with the Hedjaz instead. I think Mowers had the same problem as AkK in 1419, no diplomats for the year.

I suggest that in the future all player nations are allowed 1 diplomat at the start, this way they all have some chance to do some serious diplomacy too.

PS. Duke must love me, I had three different neighburnations to Ottomans, but he never DOW'd me, though he did smack the Mames when I wasn't present and didn't take an immediate WP when I suggested it as Venice. It must be my beatifiul personality, I guess ;)

Scenario set up - a lesson learned.

Options for Wyvern are primarily down to him. He will invariably have his own ideas that will be good to hear but my iniatial thoughts are.

1) Become France (no dutch culture) and vassalisation or 2.
2) Stay as Burgundy.

OT: The channels

The thunder last weekend fried also a TV-sender, not just the Internet- and phone-lines. Now we see only one of the four national TV-channels (Channel3) available here in the bushes. The neighbours just called, they're coming tonight to visit us, as there's nothing to see on the telly anyway. It would be cool as such, but we have a satellite receiver, and I think that's the *real* reason...
