Basically, I click to log-in, and then the PC starts fritzing. It doesn't respond to mouse clicks, massive lag, the only way to log in is to set it to remember me and then restart the PC by using the power button.

What web browser you are using? Is it up to date?
Anything weird going on in system logs(dmesg) when you try to login to forum?
Ps. Dunno if Ubuntu 14.04 already switched from upstart to systemd but if. You should check the logs by journalctl.
Ps2. Most of the time I'm on Gentoo, no problem on my side.

So I presume that you have only access to user account? No sudo/root?
Without this we probably can't do much more to try and investigate the issue.
